OT: Reggae appreciation thread
Posted by: voodoocat ()

I’ve always listened to a lot of reggae, but I haven’t heard much good new reggae.

I usually go back to the same classics:

The Harder They Come Soundtrack- Pure Reggae//Ska (this would be one of those albums to bring to a desert island)
Bob Marley- Songs of freedom 4 cd compilation (I really love the 60’s era -soul and RnB influenced sides).
Various Black Uhuru, Steel Pulse, Peter Tosh, Eek-A-Mouse

Any other Reggae fans onboard? What have you been listening to?

Rockman & undersigned are devoted reggae freaks.
He is the Knowledge; me a happy amateur.

New reggae is tough.

I like (except what you mentioned) Gregory Isaacs; Max Romeo; Skatalites;
Clash; Madness; Abyssinians; Lee "Scratch" Perry; Toots & THe Maytals;
Inner Circle; Linton Kwesi Johnson........................

My country have had and has some decent reggae acts:
One semi-reggae act is Dag Vag, others in the past were
Rockamöllan, Onna Taas Band, and many many others.
today we can still hear Peps & the younger Helt Off!!! with Timbuktu.
Much new reggae around here also, but not enuff rootsy for me.
The Iskariots is one example of something that's ok..
Will put up on Trade side soon.

Me, I also have a soft spot for the light reggae or "mock" reagge
which is out here; like UB40, The Police, Eddy Grant.
plus dancehall-ish things like Shaggy & Papa Dee (latter also Swedish).

I'll call myself a reggae fan.

Like you I prefer the old stuff.

I got some homemade compilations of various stuff(mostly 60's) and a 4 CD compilation called 'Tougher than tough - The Story of Jamaican Music', which IMO is pretty good. Besides that I got some records mostly of well known artists like Marley, Tosh, Wailer, Cliff, Sly & Robbie, Black Uhuru and Maytals etc.

Unfortunately good reggae recordings are hard to come by where I live, and I have no friends who are into this kind of music.

Matumbi is a great band I've been listening to for the last week. I think they released their records in the late seventies. The albums seems to be hard to get now, but it's possible to download at least two of their records at different torrent sites. One of their hits is "Can't Get Enough Of That Reggae Stuff" -definately great stuff!

Thanks RM, STP, Sohoe, BB- I'll do some Youtubing tomorrow. Another Reggae artist I used to like was Linton Kwesi Johnson but havent heard anything recently. I think he was much bigger in England than the US.

I don't no very much about him, just that his first big hits were on the studio One label singing over old rhytms (just like Sugar Minott).
More info here: [www.roots-archives.com]

Some great songs: "Can't By Love", "Thruth And Rights", "Purify Your Heart" and "Sing Jah Stylee".

I've been a huge ska/rock steady, and reggae fan since the early '70's.
I like most everything up into the early '80's. From then on for the most part,
it turned into computerized chaos with no soul. I lost interest during this period.
But there have been some great re-issues of the vintage/rare stuff from the Soul Jazz label, along with Trojan,
Pressure Sounds, Blood and Fire, and a few others in the last 10 years. It seems the well will never run dry.

I have quite a bit as well (having been to Jamaica 8 times, picked up an appreciation for it...and rum!).

Two really good collections, one on HIP-O records simply called "The Reggae Box" and another on Mango records called "Tougher Than Tough: The Story Of Jamaican Music" are both excellent (there is some overlap however). Both also delve into the music that lead to reggae (rock steady, ska) and what followed reggae (dancehall):

Also as previously mentioned, Bob Marley's "Songs of Freedom" is exellent, as well as Peter Tosh's "Honorary Citizen":

For something completely different, Willie Nelson put out quite an enjoyable reggae album a couple of years ago (one track featuring Toots Hibbert from Toots and the Maytals):

I also have of course "The Harder They Come".

And I have all of Ziggy Marley and the Melody Makers (much of you know Keith played on Lee and Molly on the Conscious Party CD) and a couple Ziggy solo discs. The Marley bunch has been putting out a lot of material lately, hard to keep up with it all.

All good stuff to crank up at a summer bbq while sipping a rum and coke.

Israel Vibration is a great rootsy reggae group as well as The Congas. I have a whole cd book full of reggae and this time of year is the best for putting on some reggae rhythms.

Jacob Miller is another great artist worth pointing out.
