All Down The Line--The 1972 withdrawn US single.

I have a number of boots with this track. What's the story here? Is it considered an official release? Is it on any non-bootleg release?

Withdrawn? Why? Can you elaborate please?

This version was on the B side of the Happy 7" single by mistake. Only the first pressings contain this version, later pressings had the regular album version. Same thing btw with Sway on the Wild Horses 7".

So I suppose this was "officially" released. One of the reasons I ask is that I've just put together a collection of the best versions of the Exile Session tracks culled from about 15 different boots. I was thinking of putting it up on Dime, but if this track is considered official, then it won't fly there.

Know why this version was pulled?

Thanks.

I was thinking of putting it up on Dime,

That would be great, as I was intend to do the same making an EOMS compilation

If it was withdrawn, then why not post it? What is different?

OK, I found this one, but it's just an earlier mix from the final version, and before Bill Plummer's bass was added:

According to D.Hoffmann`s WEISSBUCH the first pressing of Happy 7` contains All Down The Line III (so all the promos do), later pressings have the usual album version All Down The Line II. The difference is that the non album track (version III) is a few seconds longer ( 3:56 instead of 3:48 ). Don`t remember if it`s a different mix, but don`t think so.

Of course this is an official track and can't be put on Dime without being banned immediately!

What's the difference with Sway on the single?

Different vocals - including Keith being high up in the mix.....like a duet
and the mix is different as well

I am never sure which version I prefer; because Version III is actually more in line with Exile: more of a party atmosphere, looser. There is background noise, the piano is honky tonking up front.
The official version then is a lot cleaner, punchier. Matter of fact the short breaks in between the vocal lines are some of my favorite moments on Exile.
The first break after Jagger's very first sentence sounds like a train coming down the tracks, with just the drums, Basses, and basic guitar. Then Taylor comes in with those stinging guitar licks the next time around.
they are both great mixes IMO. It makes me wonder if Keith leaned towards III and Jagger towards II. Didn't Jagger really want ADTL to be the lead-off single?

Listening to the official version back to back with hi quality boots made me realize I really need to get some of these re-masters. I have many official albums in low quality.

The best source - apart from the original 7" - is probably Unsurpassed Masters Vol. 4.
Search and you will find...
