Actually Cream did it in a Danish movie. Just your normal Danish sucky movie from around the latter 60s and there's Cream playing on the back of a truck. I've read about when they filmed it somewhere. I've also seen it.

The Stones did it because the Harlem Jazz musicians used to do it...They never said they invented it.

The Dead did it in San Fran in the late 60s. There are some cool pictures of it from on the stage looking out to the crowd.
