On the best of thread as the boys aint working now...Listening to Duane on "Done Somebody Wrong" from Allman Brothers Live at the Fillmore...hard to beat although Taylor's take on Love in Vain circa 72 tour and Johnny Winters version of Highway 61 rate as well as many others...any thoughts slide fans?

Derek Trucks has had BIG shoes to fill, and I haven't heard anyone fill them as well as he has.

Well, Ry Cooder's stuff always sounded great to me, as did Muddy Waters. Problem is that everything they ever did was so good I can't single out one solo!

Elmore James deserves IMO to be mentioned in this thread

He sure does.

Derek Trucks is very very good--a true keeper of the Duane Allman flame.

Listening to Metamorphosis today--Mick Taylor's slide solo on "I Don't Know Why" is really great. And, Ry Cooder, of course, is another superb slide guitar player.

Great solo, to be certain, are you sure it's a slide?

What I love is when a band, especially the Stones, use the slide not only in a solo but as a flavor in the music that is accmpnanying the vox. Like in Soul Survivor the guitars do not sound like they ar chugging only on the chords. But the slide creates kind of this white-out.

"...no longer shall you trudge 'cross my peaceful mind."

Ry Cooder takes Sister Morphine to the moon and back in my opinion. The whole mood, the rise and fall of it is his magic slide...totally amazing. Listen to it again.
Ronnie and Mick T can not play like that.

His slide playing on Memo From Turner is amazing as well

I would also strongly recommend his slide work on Captain Beefheart's Safe as Milk

Duane's Statesboro Blues is perfection and reinvented electric slide. Eric Clapton said "Before Duane there was just Elmore James licks and everybody knows those".

Ry Cooder: the bible for white guys.
Brian Jones: everything, he was pure genius on that slide.
Howlin Wolf: same
Muddy Waters: everything
Keith Richards: Midnight Rambler (yes I love it)
Mick Taylor: his solo on Happy the winter tour bootleg 1973 (not sure which concert)
Ron Wood: everything on Love you live. Mostly overdubs but what the heck. Give him some neck. Listen to the solo on happy or the third side. Yummy.

Ronnie's 1995 take on the All Down The Line slide solo. Also Taylor's go at the same solo from Bedspring Symphony.

Honorary mention: The RJ slide solo on ABB and the badass licks on DTF from the same album. Also Brian's No Expectations slide from R 'n R Circus.

I love Mick T's and Ronnnie's slide playing...Keith's and Brian's too...throw in Ry Cooder -- All fantasic...Trucks is obviously something special

But Statesboro Blues, to me, is the best...Then, he could turn around and texture "layla" like that....

"Crazy mama" by JJ Cale (he actually did not play the slide himself) - the best slide I have ever heard.
