Keith's version of Hank Williams' "You Win Again"

In case anyone hasn't heard this, there's a great solo Keith track on a Hank Williams tribute album. He does "You Win Again" in a Stax-style arrangement with horns. Very nice vocal. One of his best solo tracks of any kind, IMO. Also on the album: Lucinda Williams, Sheryl Crow, Tom Petty, Hank III...

Yes, it is nice but dont anyone expect a Hank clone on this one. Like you said Keith completely restyled it! I put together(for my own amusement) a CD called "The Many Moods Of Keith Richards" combining solo or collaboration efforts and included this track.

Keith's voice was made for country music. Listen to his duet with George Jones on Burn Your Playhouse down.

This and his version of "Still a Fool" are all that has officially been released of his great sessions with Rob Fraboni and Blondie Chaplin from 2000 and 2001. I'll take either of these over his work with the Stones since BRIDGES TO BABYLON. Raw, soulful tracks that are dripping with mood.

Couldn't agree more Rocky! If we had a whole Keith solo album like this we'd be very happy (pun intended).

... some of the greatest records he's cut are the country harmonies with Mick.

I agree. This was a leftover from the "Say Its Not You " Jones session from the 90s which is also a great song. I especially began to notice this during the Sticky Fingers-Exile" period how Keith's harmonies with Mick sounded as natural as Buck Owens and Don Rich!

As good as it was, I was disappointed when "Talk Is Cheap" came out because it was very riff-y and heavy. I had always hoped a Keith Richards solo album would include some country stuff. His vocal on You Got The Silver, and harmonies on Torn & Frayed, Wild Horses, and others was tantalizing, and led one to speculate on what a Keith Richards solo album might sound like.

I really do like both Winos records but agree that TALK IS CHEAP wasn't what I was expecting. I was young enough at the time (17) to believe the hype from Rolling Stone and Musician that I was going to hear EXILE PART TWO. The thing is Keith's focus or abilities change throughout his career. Those two solo albums make sense in retrospect. Likewise, I wouldn't expect him to either be interested or capable of delivering a third solo album in the same style as the first two were he to undertake a solo album again. VOODOO LOUNGE was the final appearance of that particular Keith and BRIDGES marked the beginning of the current incarnation. I prefer the two Fraboni-produced covers but they are still a long way from the Winos in sound, arrangement, or production.

Mick, also does a version of that song on a cd called "Outtakes vol 6 disc 2 1977-1979.
Sounds pretty good, Mick sings lead and Keith Harmonizes.

Love how Keith pushes it from low-geared ballad up into a Stax/Volt style blow-out...

thats from the RCA 78 sessions I believe. If Mick knew the words it woulda been better. Keith tries to lead him with the correct ones but Mick seems like he doesnt care much!
