Tim Ries Live Tonight

Hey anyone in the Pacific Northwest of the USA, Tim Ries and his band will be doing a jazz set tonight at the legendary Jimmy Mac's. 221 NW 10th Ave in Portland Oregon, Janurary 28th @8pm.

I caught him and the guys (Bernard, Blondie, Bobby, Michael Davis) in Amsterdam last summer and if you can go, you should. They do some great Stones jazz tumes and other swingin stuff.

Do you know where you can find his tour schedule? His site kind of quits in early 2006 and has not been updated.

i always give him a hard time about that.

is it the rolling stones project that's playing? he probably won't be playing any stones stuff unless it's with the project - he has his own jazz music to play too.

Ok, the show was last night and it was way cool. Tim played sax, claranet and piano. His band consisted of a great local bassist whom he had just met that night, a great local guitarist who plays Jimmy's every Monday, a killer young drummer from Seatle, and a buddy of his that sat in on a few numbers on the trumpet. What an amazing band!

I got a chance to talk with Tim for a few and he was way cool. Told him how much I enjoyed the Stones Project gig in Amsterdam last summer and he said that it would be a similar set tonight but no other Stones tonight but he did promise to bring Bernard next time. I also asked him about the posibility of a Stones sumnmer European tour this year and he said he knew nothing about it and hoped to know soon if there is anything in the works so he can book gigs this summer or not.

He was promoting the Rolling Stones Project album and was selling copies. Everyone should check this record out. It's got all the Stones appearing on it and other cool artists doing jazz interpentations of Stones tunes.

Here was the setlist from Monday night: Stones tunes, jazz standards, and original jams.

1st Set
----------
Honky Tonk Women
Waiting On A Friend
Cue #6 AKA Funky Number (Tim's original tune, written for a independent film)
Belleli (another Tim original. Quiet piano tune, on the Stones Project CD)
Summertime (featuring an amazing guest female vocal)
Street Fighting Man

2nd Set
----------
Paint It Black
Slipping Away
Solar (Miles Davis Tune)
Gimme Shelter

GO SEE 'EM IF YOU CAN! bad ass jams

All the Stones but Mick, which I find strange -- that he gave Tim permission to proceed with doing Stones songs, but he is the only one not involved.

Sadly, it was a one night only thing. He is not even officaly on tour...just a couple of gigs here and there. He did tell me that he was flying back home to New York the next morning.

BTW, it was billed simply as Tim Ries.
