Midnight Rambler

Does anyone know the exact first 3 chords of this masterpiece? I've been trying to find it but never sounds just right. I think the studio version is a bit different too, from live versions.

I play it on B , d chord on 9th fret , then E, but somethings missing....help all you riffhard wannabe's

Re: Midnight Rambler

B, open D and A-string together and E (two thirds of the chord)

It's not just straight chords. From a regular B chord go to a B6 (that is adding the note Ab either on the A string or on the B string).
Thebn there are those two hits before it goes to the E chord. They are the A chord. Play the A up there in the D [position in 9th fret.
On the E chord he also goes from E to E6 to E7. That is just adding the C3/ D notes to the chord.
Then for the second part it just turns the chords around. This is Keithian writing at it's finest. He just inverts the progression. It begins with the A (actually an Asus sounds better), to the E 7, to the B chord.
The main body of the song, the instrumental part, fats part is all just a B chord basically.

"...no longer shall you trudge 'cross my peaceful mind."

It's just a blues shuffle in B and then on to E, right?
Or do miss some notes now, ChelseaDrugstore? I couldn't figure out what you meant in post.

Cheers,
Wuudy

Yes Wuudy, I HATE this explaining of a riff on line. It is just a blues shuffle from B to E. Buyt inbetween the B and E there is also a quick A chord.
What I mean by the inversion thing is this.
--------B - - - - A - - - - E - - - - B - - - A - - - -E
Did you hear about the midnight rambler everybody got to go
B A E B A E
Well I'm talking about the midnight gambler, the one that shut the kitchen door.
A E B A E B
He's sighing down the wind so sadly listen and you hear him moan
A E B A E B
Well I'm just talkin bout the midnight rambler the one you never seen before

lyrics are just off top of head. But you know..\
Man, I have tried editing this thing 4 yimes already so that the chords sit the right place. When I type it they are correct but when I post it they slide all over the place.

"...no longer shall you trudge 'cross my peaceful mind."

Don't forget the capo on the 7th fret! It makes all the difference, just like an open tuning. Once you got it there, just experiment with various blues shuffles (based on the E and A strings) and licks right there, and you'll discover a lot on your own. I could write a pretty accurate tab here, but don't have the time right now. Good luck!

Ok, thanks Chelsea! I thought the A was an E. That's why i got confused :-)

The A is actually a short stroke on the A and D-strings simultaneously just before hitting the E.

Yea, I remember that. It's still embarrassing.

Funny, at work everyone considers me to be the new business sales whore amongst a bunch of mormons. LMAO

I will never understand everyone's love of this song, as long as I live.

The A is played like this (Capo on 7th fret)

0
3
2
0
X
X

This is an Asus2 (or Aadd9, not sure) and it means that the B note (the open first string) rings throughout the riff. This makes all the difference along with the "extra" notes.

hi forligan! remember me? i used to have a screen name that is no longer allowed to be mentioned here. here is a hint: M_r_d_th H_nt_r

it's funny that my name gets banned because you were so offended by it, yet in the same thread you said the following quote:

"you limey english bastard...........off the isle with you and your kind, the fuhrer should have blown yous to bits when he had the chance.........course I love the Beatles and Stones....they don't count.!!"

i guess i will have to figure out what's offensive here and what's not. thanks for the learning experience and good luck with Midnight Rambler.

Well the lyrics are abit dark but the groove is great! That's what I like about it.

after thinking about this song "Midnight Rambler", i have decided that it glorifies murder and i am highly offended by it. HIGHLY OFFENDED! I would suggest that the song "Midnight Rambler" be banned from any further discussion here on IORR. we must stick to our principles. If my old screen name can't be used, neither should this song.

Re: Midnight Rambler

i would like to take this opportunity to quote the poster known as "Tralala", here is what they said about my old screen name:

------------------------------------------------
"Could you change your nick, MH? It's quite tasteless and actually brings up a lot of bad memories. Besides, as creative as you seem, you can come up with a new name - Like Rachel Hunter (Rod's ex...)

You probably understand why your choice of nick name is a problem for many of us. If you don't, it's called respect for the dead and decency"
------------------------------------------------------------

OK, by these standards, Tralala would certainly agree with me that discussing the song "Midnight Rambler" here should definitly be off limits. A song celebrating the Boston Strangler has no respect for the dead and decency. i'm glad we agree on this.

Hey Meredith...sorry some people still choose to cry to get attention. The shit that goes on here sometimes boggles my mind.

I suppose someone is going to cry that they lost a lot of money playing Bingo and they find my name offensive. LOL

PS... Your new name may insult someone who believes their screen name is the best screen name ever, so be prepared for someone to cry about it. LOL unbelievable.

hi Bingo, i too find these events mind boggling, but i'm trying to make sense of it.

the hypocrisy of it all is crystal clear. i will feel a whole lot better about it as soon as the song "Midnight Rambler" is banned from discussion here. i am simply defending the victims of the Boston Strangler. i'm sure that those who took offense to my old screen name will back me up on this.

Getting briefly back to original point of the thread ;^).

Once the Capo and the basic riff are taken care of, I don't think there's ever a "right" or "wrong" with a song like rambler... so long as the feel and groove are intact.
By now Keith's played just about every blues lick which falls naturally under the fingers when you play the song.
Just play around with it. You'll hear yourself nailing all the same licks that Keith has popped in over the last 35 years or so.
Apart from anything else, when you start trying to nail a note for note rendition of any Stones song, you'll lose the feel and the groove. The band themselves don't work like that...so neither should you. Play what comes naturally and you'll get much closer to the spirit and the tension in the playing.

Just curious: how do you stroke the chords?

The verse part is, of course, mainly downstrokes.

The in between B part, to get the feel I play it down and up strokes (with a "stirring" wrist move), but I am not sure what keith does.

My big Q is on the "double speed" reprise section. At ya ya's speed I can keep playing it only downstrokes (and it sounds good) but at Brusselles speed I have to quit, and play up and down strokes. How does keith play it?

Again, it's just as a matter of curiosity (I'll play it the way I like it anyway)

In general, to play rambler correctly, the truly hard task is to find a drummer that nails it. Most of them who can hit hard, don't swing, and those who can swing, often can't hit hard. A good drummer for rambler needs to swing and to hit hard, when needed!

Well I must say I am glad that there is finally someone else on this board who finds the lyrics to this song just God awful!! I can't believe fans have canonized this song the way they have. I hate this song!! I have no problem with them singing about the devil, but man the minute they start turning to this........no thanks. This used to be just my least favorite live song, but since I heard it at just about every concert on the ABB tour, I think it's now moved into my least favorite stones song slot period, studio or live.
