Was Brian such a limited guitarist ... ?

apparently, yes. keith does almost all of the notable non-slide parts on the records, too.

<The Rolling Stones very rarely played live for filmed performances . . mainly lip synching after Aftermath.>

That's not the Stones' fault?

They would usually lip synch songs like Satisfaction and Cloud on television as well. I think they just got lazy.

So yo think the stones ordered the tv-companies to only appear on stage if they could lip sync? Come on, that's how the tv shows were back then - and again in the 80s...

The Ed Sullivan Show had them play live occasionally. I think after Satisfaction, the Stones were such a popular and sought-after group, that they could have demanded to play their songs live. I think they didn't want to because it was more of a bother for them. Mick would usually sing live over the recorded track.

After their aftermath album, it might have been hard to duplicate the songs live because of the many elements and musicians who created the more complex sound.

>> The Ed Sullivan Show had them play live occasionally <<

er ... they're all live performances until the september 1966 show.
the Stones started using playback on the Sullivan show because the Sullivan sound engineers
couldn't be bothered getting the sound right otherwise. the february 66 "Satisfaction" performance was live,
and it was a mess soundwise.

>> Mick would usually sing live over the recorded track <<

from the september 1966 show onward, all the Sullivan shows
featured Mick and Keith doing live vocals to a prerecorded backing track.

it's interesting that in Britain the live/playback progression went almost the opposite direction:
the earliest RSG and Top of the Pops performances were playback, then for a few years they were mostly live,
then they went back to playback again.

but none of the above has any bearing on the TAMI show. everything i've read from eyewitnesses
indicates that that performance is not playback. nzentgraf is brilliant of course,
and way more accurate than most sources, but he doesn't get everything right.

I don't think that the sound engineers on the Ed Sullivan show bossed the Stones around. Brian was probably in no condition to play the sitar or recorder live on nation-wide television anyway.

As with sssoul says All Sullivan shows pre Aftermath were live, the TAMI show was a live performace, there were loads of other early shows that were live(although some were lip-synched as many other bands did.) Theres lots of dvds avail that you can check out-do some research!)

Heres one of the best early Satisfactions and its LIVE!
