it's a question of purity. I listen to all my tunes on mp3. HOWEVER...if i download, say, a copy of Brussels Affair as mp3s, and then decide i want to listen to it on my conventional CD player, I have to 'expand' the mp3(s) to a file that a CD player can understand - a 'wav' file. Now, in the original conversion from wav to mp3, a hell of a lot of the source material is lost. You can't hear it, to an extent, but there is a loss.
If you try and 'expand' to 100% something that's only 15% in size, you probably won't notice the sound difference. but if you were to LOAN that CD with mp3s masquerading as ordinary CD tracks to somebody and THEY were to make mp3s of it, then the sound would be lousy.
Thus, I think the convention is that it's good manners on torrent sites to upload/download larger files. They tend to use 'flac' files which are slightly smaller than 'wav' but have no loss in sound (flac stands for free lossless audio codec')
If you wanna download mp3s, rock on - the 'hot stuff' section here is f**king brilliant for that and it's where i get most of my stuff...but you shoudln't, as a rule, burn stuff you got on MP3 to audio CD and pass it on to anybody...

if the file name is blah.wav.bak
rename as blah.wav
I don't know if it helps, though. It did for me in the past!
