It was the third of September.

That day I'll always remember, yes I will.
'Cause that was the day that my daddy died.
I never got a chance to see him.
Never heard nothing but bad things about him.
Mama, I'm depending on you to tell me the truth.

And Mama just hung her head and said,
"Son, Papa was a rolling stone.
Wherever he laid his hat was his home.
(And when he died) All he left us was a loan."
"Papa was a rolling stone, my son.
Wherever he laid his hat was his home.
(And when he died) All he left us was a loan."

Well, well.

Hey Mama, is it true what they say,
that Papa never worked a day in his life?
And Mama, some bad talk going around town
saying that Papa had three outside children and another wife.
And that ain't right.
Hey, talk about Papa doing some store front preaching.
Talked about saving souls and all the time leeching.
Dealing in debt and stealing in the name of the Lord.

Mama just hung her head and said,
"Papa was a rolling stone, my son.
Wherever he laid his hat was his home.
(And when he died) All he left us was a loan."
"Hey, Papa was a rolling stone.
Wherever he laid his hat was his home.
(And when he died) All he left us was a loan."

Uh.

Hey Mama, I heard Papa called himself a jack of all trades.
Tell me is that what sent Papa to an early grave?
Folks say Papa would beg, borrow, steal to pay his bills.
Hey Mama, folks say that Papa was never much on thinking.
Spent most of his time chasing women and drinking.
Mama, I'm depending on you to tell me the truth.

And Mama looked up with a tear in her eye and said,
"Son, Papa was a rolling stone. (Well, well, well, well)
Wherever he laid his hat was his home.
(And when he died) All he left us was a loan."
"Papa was a rolling stone.
Wherever he laid his hat was his home.
(And when he died) All he left us was a loan."

"I said, Papa was a rolling stone. Wherever he laid his hat was his home.
(And when he died) All he left us was a loan."

Hats off to Motown's Mr.Norman Whitfield, the legendary producer of that song.

Do you know it took him 2 years to get Berry Gordy to release Marvin Gaye's "I Heard It Through the Grapevine?" Gordy thought it was crap....

I always thought that the singer was saying "and when he died . . . all he left us was alone," not "a loan."

I remember the 3rd of September (last year) for another reason. The Stones were playing Moncton and I was in the hospital. How pathetic.

Well that's sort of the hook in it: the play on words of a loan/alone.
Totally cool song. How can anyone hate it?

"...no longer shall you trudge 'cross my peaceful mind."

Well it probably wouldn't be too bad if he left them a loan. Because he just died, so they wouldn't have to pay him back the loan. Right?

Unless he was leaving them a loan TO pay back, like one they had co-signed or something. And it was like at 10% interest or something. That wouldn't be so good.

Grampa Loved The Rolling Stones by Bob Rivers

(Parody of Papa Was a Rolling Stone)

They’re coming here in December
I heard they got a new member
Yes they did
And my only prayer
Is that gramps were alive

He never got a chance to see them
Losing all of his vision and most of hearing
But grandma had Depends in the room
Where he’d crank their tunes

Grandma just shook her head and said Kid
Grampa loved the Rolling Stones
And when he heard Paint It Black
He smoked bones
And when he died
they buried him next to Brian Jones

Hey Grandma
Is it true what they say that Keith
stumbled into Mick
The day they discovered fire
And grandma some wise talk goin’ round town
sayin’ that Charlie Watts' three great-grandchildren are about to retire
Now that ain’t nice

Heard some talk about Mick he getting some
Intensive carin’
Roamin’ around the nursing home
With Alzheimer’s flarin’
Older than dead
Steel Wheelchairs
the name of the tour

Grandma just hung her head and said
Grampa loved the Rolling Stones
And when they played Satisfaction
He’d moan
And when he died they carved a big tongue
On his headstone

Grampa loved the Rolling Stones
When he played Jumpin’ Jack Flash
Heart of Stone or Play with Fire
He almost passed a kidney stone
