That wild sound in Street Fighting Man
Posted by: Erik_Snow ()

I've just listened to Pay Your Dues and Street FIghting Man,
what is that wild feedback sound on the chorus...it sounds like a piano-feedback. Very wierd, and very cool. Of course I've noticed this sound since I was 5, but I still don't know how this sound is created....
Some ideas maybe?

Thanks, Beelyboy, I've seen that thing, I remember now.
It's a really wild sound, perhaps Keith and Ronnie could do a few songs on theremins instead of guitars for a change!
I might be wrong about this, but isn't it a theremin in We Love You too? Or it could be a Mellotron..

THanks, Beelyboy, the 2nd link there was really great, I'm reading about the THeremin right now.
This surely looks pretty spooky!

It definitely sounds like a mellotron in "We Love You." "SFM," I'm not sure... it's a more interesting sound than a theremin usually gets, imo.

You're right, it's too wild, it's like a parody of the secret life in Moscow in the early 1900s, here's a link the story about Theremin, I found it under the link you posted.
And yes, that IS THeremin himself up there.

What an utter bollocks, where do you people get all this bullshit from? The high pitched sound throughout is Dave Mason (from Traffic) on the Shehani, an Indian reed instrument. There's no Theramin on any Stones record.

i think there's an explanation to that right in Four Flicks in a piece of interview where keith remembers how they (he and charlie i think) cut SFM the first time. If i remember well he speaks about a little tape recorder and the effect of distortion due to the distance from where they were playing and the fact that they liked that and kept to the final cut. I might be wrong, check it out must be the additional content to the song on the MSG disc.

That's about the basic guitar track. The droning instrument is something else, added later.

i would never want to contradict mathijs.... but if the shehani is what mick talks about ("with Dave Mason playing the shehani on it live. It's a kind of Indian reed instrument a bit like a primitive clarinet. It comes in at the end of the tune. It has a very wailing, strange sound.") it can be heard clearly and only right after the end of the singing, just as a monotone blowing sound.

Now the question is: is this that "wild feedback sound on the chorus...it sounds like a piano-feedback" that erik is asking about?

i have my doubts. I think the droning, feedback effect is just the product of that primitive recording that i referred to and beelyboy confirmed.

Erik?

Thanks Beelyboy you made my night, now I understand that Mathijs is right.

It could also be a sitar, see link above to time is on our side.

>>What an utter bollocks, where do you people get all this bullshit from?<<

Obviously, the reason I asked about it is that I had no idea what made that sound. So of course I'd jump on whatever explanation I get.

Perhaps it is....

The most famous song with a theramin would be Whole Lotta Love by ZEP, hands down!

sorry about that, I was drunk last night...

Btw, the sitar you hear droning is actually a tamboura, a sitar without droning strings. You can not play melodies on a tamboura, it only drones away.

It's the world on this thread, a little fighting here and there, (but no harm intended) and a whole lotta love and peace in the end.

Whether it is this effect or that instrument: they sure must have had a lot of fun recording and composing these songs, gradually building the sounds of these songs.

Thanks Mathijs, that explains it,
yes a "tamboura" makes sense, 'cos there are definately strings hidden in the "wrowl".
