I dusted this CD by first time in years... it's a damn masterpiece. It rocks your brain, it's amazing. 999, Wicked As It Seems, Eileen, Bodytalks!, Hate It When You Leave!!!, Will But You Won't...all great. I love the sound too, dark and dangerous and the band's performace is outstanding. I rediscovered this album and it's peaking fast on my favorite solo albums list, very fast actually.
Yup - can't help feeling however, that if Jagger (Wandering Spirit) and Richards (Main Offender) har pooled their talents at this particular period in time we could have had on hell of a Stones album .....but then again ;-)
Yes, totally underrated! It's great. I like Talk is Cheap, too! And I think Wandering Spirit is ok, but not great. And a little confession: I like Goddess! I liked it from the beginning - and it's getting better. Give it another chance!
I think Keef won easily the first round (Primitively Cool vs. Talk Is Cheap), but Jagger took the second round (Wandering Spirit vs. Main Offender). In both cases, an absolutely great single Stones album was lost. It is painful to see how weak Steel Wheel is compared to the material in those solo albums. But then again, we have a dozen or something great Stones albums, but not very many great solo albums. Perhaps it was necessary for Mick and Keith do those solo ones - and for us to catch them without the help of the other Glimmer. Something different for a change.

My experience was M.Offender lacked the immediate impact of TIC, in that the lyrics were even less linear, Keith was exploring certain musical territory that made it seem to like the debut. On later listenings I found I too prefer it to Talk, the rhythms are more dense, Keith & his backup (fewer guest stars, too) are more confident and the production and ambience - "dark and dangerous" is just right...Loved the '93 tour supporting it. Naturally it sold way less than the more accessable debut. Dont need it to be a Stones album, it's killer as is.

i think you're the 'main offender' around here shidoobee! whilst i certainly do like Main Offender, it is simply no match for the greatness that is Wandering Spirit.

I really love his live album from the Palladium. And I start to love Talk Is Cheap. For me, Main Offender is a low point, BUT... I can still change my opinion.

I thought the same for years, but Main Offender grown a lot in me.
