Forgive me if this is a dumb question, but I'm new here:

How do smiley face icons get into posts if I don't put them there, and WHY are they put there? Is this something that is triggered automatically, or does someone insert them?

Also, is the censorship of certain words automatic?

Yes, on the second question.

As for the smilies, they are showing up in YOUR posts?
Only reason I can see is that you might have mistakenly typed the code for a smiley.

Thanks for clearing that up...

The one that gets me every time is that when you type a closing bracket without putting a space in front of it, you will get an unwanted smiley (like this),

Add a space before the closing bracket and the smiley goes away ( just like THAT ).

Ten seconds later..
Hmmmm - that didn't work as intended. I know that if you get a smiley where you've closed a set of brackets, the way to get rid of it is to put a space before the ) but I can't make it happen to order. Curses - foiled again!

The quotation followed by the end paranthese is seemingly code for that particular smiley.
