Stones' reaching 1st million selling album in the UK

Finally, in a career of more than 43 years, The Rolling Stones have enjoyed enormous success but never managed to have a million selling album in the UK - until now. Their recently reactivated 2002 compilation Forty Licks sailed into seven figure territory on Friday, earning a well deserved first for the band. It’s the 100th artist album to sell upwards of a million copies since 2000. Seven compilations have also reached the target. Forty Licks sold 8,887 copies last week, while dipping 26-29, taking its total to 1,003,040.

Quite surprising it took so long. Interesting. They will fire UK. Did Mr.Cohl buy the 3,040 copies ?

THe reason for the many buyers, is because Bill's daughters finally could listen to the Rolling Stones, without a cover of their father who ran off of them.

Georgelicks, what about the sales of "Hot Rocks" in the UK? Just curious...

"Hot Rocks" wasnt a UK release, Sticky - it was a US compilation

I dont think we got it here until it was repackaged on CD in the late 80's/early 90s

The compilation that came out in the UK just after "Hot rocks" was called 'Milestones' which was a single LP release instead of a double

The definitive UK repackage of the Decca era was "Rolled Gold" which came out in the mid 70s and then the (long deleted) Arcade Records TV advertised "Get Stoned" from 1977, both of them double albums

Many thanks Gazza. Honestly, i didn't knew that "Hot Rocks" came in UK so late.

Here's the cover of 'Rolled Gold' - a fine compilation.

"Get Stoned" on the now defunct Arcade Records (and also the first Stones record I ever bought!)

"Milestones" was the second Decca repackage after they left the label (after "Stone Age" whose release prompted the Stones to take a full page ad in the music press asking their fans not to buy 'inferior' repackages of old product...Hmm...)

something of an odd release. Half of it was genuine hits, but a few randomly selected album tracks too, such as She Said Yeah, Stray Cat Blues, I Just wanna make love to you and yesterdays Papers

Rolled Gold is the best collection I know of, and one of the best covers too.
If they had fitted in Around And Around, then it couldn't be done better.
Now, here's a thing I wonder about....
I see Mick's face is from 70....(don't ask me why, please),
but could someone please find which photos all the heads are taken from? (especially Keith's face). That would have been cool!

Rolled Gold has got to be the only release ever where six Stones are pictured on the cover instead of five or four.

Hot Rocks was released in UK in June 1990. The album reached #3 on the UK charts during the UK tour and re-entered several times during the 90's (1993-95-98-99) and it was certified double platinum by BPI (600.000 copies sold) in 1999.

Metamorphosis has Brian and Taylor.

Btw, I heard Milestones, Rolled Goled, Stone Age and those other ones weren't authorized releases by the Stones.

All of the Decca compilation albums are just Allen Klein trying to milk the Stones catalog.

I was impressed that 40 Licks sold a million in the UK but then when Georgelicks mentions that platinum is 300,000 in sales, this means that it's just triple platinum (and 1/3). I would have thought that a couple of their albums would have gone quadruple platinum (1.2 million).

Georgelicks, out of curiousity, what are some of their other best sellers in the UK? Also, perhaps a stupid question, but does UK include Scotland and Ireland sales?

and Rarities is the Rolling Stones and Virgin doing exactly the same that they used to complain that Klein did!

yeah but its a double CD - so effectively thats like 2 million units, surely

I would have

that would be equivalent to 6 million copies sold in the US (5 times the UK population), and albums with those kind of sales are pretty thin on the ground, unless you count Hot Rocks, which wasnt released in the UK as a vinyl album.

UK sales for 40 Licks is pretty impressive considering theyve only played ten shows here since its release, whereas theyve played about 110 shows in the US in that time and sold 2.3 million copies

UK is England, Scotland, Wales & Northern Ireland

Republic of Ireland would be a separate statistic

Thanks for the info Gazza. I'm wondering if the UK sales would be similar to how they count album sales in the US, where a double CD sold would count as 2 sales? So has 40 Licks actually sold 500k in the UK but because it's a double, it's counted twice? Georgelicks, any info?

the actual number of copies sold is just over 1 million, so I guess 2 million units

Only RIAA counts the sales of double albums twice.
