Undercover. A remake of Exile?

Reading in "Old Gods Almost Dead", the author says there is a certain aura of remake of Exile, when you listen to Undercover. For instance, he names It Must Be Hell as a reworking of Soul Survivor and I Wanna Hold You as a reworking of Happy. What do you think? I like the album a lot, especially Tie You Up (The Pain of Love). In one other thing I do agree: the album has a certain integrity which got lost from Dirty Work onwards.

I'd say he went a bit too far, probably for the sake of the book.
It Must Be Hell obviously uses a 1983 version of the main Soul Survivor riff (the lyrics are much different) but,Wanna Hold You and Happy have many differences.Similar theme to the lyrics but, different sounding songs.

As my grandmother used to say when she heard some silly statement...."Your ass full of hot prunes." Exile and Undercover...what a joke.

Undercover was the last experimental Stones album, closer to Satanic Majesties in spirit than Exile. It's a dark and bleak album. Just read those lyrics - only Keith's goofy, good-timey, non-sensical I Wanna Hold You breaks an otherwise unrelenting stream of nasty, bloody, violent imagery. It is also - in my opinion - greatly underrated. At its best, it's a fusion of dance music and rock, which is sometimes very succesful (Undercover, Too mUch Blood, She Was Hot).

Midnight Rambler is a remake of She smiled sweetly.

I agree in part. I find that Undercover has more than one similarity with Exile. They do have the same feel. They both are very groovie, with undefined instrumental parts, thousands of overdubs, crossover styles, etc.

Then, of course, exile is THE masterpiece, but ...

I think that if all the outtakes of Undercover were included to make two double album the affinity would be even more evident. Same goes with Dirty Work.

Don't believe me? Just burn (as I did) a cdr and check yourselves

I knew Exile. Exile was a great album. Undercover - you are no Exile.

As TSMR is a remake of Out Of Our Heads.
Let Me Down Slow has a similar style to Dead Flowers,& RJ has a '70's feel to it but, that's where it ends.

Must Be Hell and one of my least fav Stones songs, Rock and a Hard Place are both lifted from Soul Survivor.

Undercover could have been written by any common band. Only Keith, Mick and Taylor could have given birth to Exile.

I have never liked Undercover - and it is not for lack of trying. I take it out of its case periodically to give it another go - hoping I might have missed something - but I can hardly bear to listen through the entire thing. Doesn't belong in the same sentence as Exile.
