He never said that.There were reports that at the end of December 2006,the previously planned end of this tour,he would not do more long world tours.It never said he would retire or stop playing live concerts or did the reports rule out shorter tours.

On the interview at ZDF, which was also posted here and recorded in Japan he said the Rolling Stones is a job for him. What he does NOT like at all is travelling. So this might be an issue.

I suppose Charlie's trist with cancer has perhaps made him question his priorities a little more...but I don't worry too much about him hanging up his sticks just yet.
He says he "leaves the band after every tour" anyway.
I think charlie may share one characteristic with me. He never particularly WANTS to do anything...but can usually be persuaded, and quite enjoys it in the end ;^)

Charlie always says this is the last, he has done since the early 90's

Charlie NEVER stated that this tour would be the end, just that he'd had enough of the "globe trotting"

I wish the Stones would consider "retiring" from the football stadiums and basektball arenas and just doing theather shows now and then! How cool would that be?

zero confirmation that he ever actually said that - and someone has to bring it up every ten days for the woe-is-we crowd.

I think they should continue to play bigger venues, so that as many people as possible, young and old, can witness the live magic before it's too late.

When Charlie says that's it I hate to say it it's probably it! He's burnt man. When i saw them leave Wellington he looked like he wanted it to end then while Keith and Woody got into the same car laughing to the airport when they left the hotel on there way to Fiji.

They gave us so much yoy!!!!I hope they give us a...proud goodbey..not like this!!!

Not cool in the least - give me the stadium gigs all the time - with the exception of a small club gig,which I don't suppose I'll ever see.

Charlie also said post cancer that playing with the Stones gives him structure, purpose, a reason to get up and do work that he chose as a young man - as an artist, a musician - work he is great at, takes pride in, at which he has been hugely successful and compensated for. He hates the travel, but also said he gets bored and does nothing around the house. (I paraphrase, but I don't have the various comments at hand). His words in interviews can seem indifferent, because he is terse and not prone to hyperbole or spin of any kind, but he is a core Stone - good friends with BOTH Mick & Keith, and Ron (and even Bill). The Stones never really did these vast year plus world tours until Cohl got involved in 1989, 27 years into the bands career. The '69 tour of the US was a mere month long. So scaling back at this point, doing shorter 'tours' maybe special one or two week bookings of theatres and arenas, makes sense. He is 65 (the age at which Howlin Wolf and Miles Davis died), Mick & Keith 63 this year. Right now the future looks wide open, but such a scaling back would make sense - and is something I expected years ago.

In Europe, can't he just fly home after each gig? I was reading Nicko McBrain (Iron Maiden) tour diary and thats how they do Europe - fly back home to London each night after every gig. Even when doing consecutive gigs which the Stones don't do.
