I sipped a scotch and watched a little of both last night. I really believe that Licks has it over BB both in the live footage as well as the documentary. The playing is certainly better and I generally believe that the three sizes concept was the best idea they had in ages. I've watched Licks many times but BB only a handful.
100 per cent Licks without a shadow of a doubt. It's worth buying just for the incredible performance of That's How Strong My Love Is alone. But the rest is pretty cool too.
I'd go so far as saying it's the best performance by The Stones of any song since, ohh, at least the 70s.
For me, Jagger reincarnates to his 22-year-old self as he oozes every emotion out of this gut-wrenching heart felt peon to idolistic love. This is not him going through the emotions, this is the real thing. This is soul in its truest form.
Here you go - buckle up your seatbelts cos this is lift off.

Dagger - its funny that you say that. For me, this is one of the best moments as well. In BB, you get Sway and a few other fan faves, but nothing comes close to the performance at the Olympia in Licks. Even though they messed it up a bit, Hand of Fate was a fav of mine as well.
I know. They went back to the roots a bit more on Licks and really impressed me with the volume of songs they had in their canon. While they whipped out a few fan favs on BB (Sway and She Was Hot) they didn't seem nearly as versatile as on Licks.
I think I'm also biased as to my personal experiences on the two tours. On Licks, I was just out of college, not taking things too seriously, and made it to all three shows in Philly. On BB, I was in grad. school and had more responsibilities to keep me from shows. I caught two that were good, but not among my favorites of the twelve shows I've seen since high school.
They both have their up's and downs but,the most obvious direct comparison for me is " You Can't Always Get What You Want " . The version from Copacabana Beach in Rio February 18th,2006 is much better than the version from the Twickenham Rugby Ground in London August 24th,2003.
LICKS it is for me...I was @ the MSG show, real up close on side of stage..being from NY I gotta feel MSG is special...I saw them in 69,72,75 @ MSG as well...The Twickenham show is their homecoming and its cool to hear MJ in french.. I saw Licks about 8x, Bang @ 10x, including on that Mother of a stage..in Hartford Ct... but anytime you can see The Greatest RocknRoll band in the world it is a paramount event. Four Flicks - to give its proper title - is better by a mile and the best thing the Stones have released since 1981.
Biggest Bang doesnt really justify being a 4-disc release because there wasnt the same variety in the concept of the shows on that tour as there was in 2002-03.
That said, 'Learning the Game' is the best thing on BOTH releases.
Definitely Licks. The Olympia set list was fabulous, with an incredible performance by Mick during Worried About You). And the HBO is the best of my 54 Stones concerts through the years. To be honest, i'm not sure i've watched the whole BB set. By the way, That's How Strong My Love Is was something very special during Licks (To be honest, it brought tears in my eyes everytimes i got it), but the best @#$%& version was not the Paris one. Remeber the Roseland, Mick was just awesome.
Both have a weak disc (Austin and Twickenham) but the remaining 6 discs are full of super stuff. The club, MSG, Copacabana, the world, the documentaries.
If you consider the level of the shitty B2B DVD release, these 4DVD sets are a dream!
The issue with Biggest Bang is that it would have been way better including the whole Saitama performance in 16:9 picture format, as broadcast in Japan.
Licks i was lucky enough to catch the trifecta in boston at the beginning of the tour and if you go back and look at those as one giant setlist it was pretty special
Quote Doc The issue with Biggest Bang is that it would have been way better including the whole Saitama performance in 16:9 picture format, as broadcast in Japan.
Agreed. I watch Saitama 2006 more than either BB or 4 Flicks.
Flicks has plenty of high points and live rarities, but imo the guitar team is more consistent, and cohesive, on Biggest Bang, thus its more Stones-centric (rather than Leavell centric), grungier, and there are many wonderful songs not played at the six East coast shows I attended. Or in Texas' case, utterly unique yet fully developed one-offs....
