i hear "Charlie", not "child". i know all the lyrics sites have "child" but ... it's Charlie.
to say something is a bitch means it's very difficult, unpleasant, etc.
and i don't think every horse in a Stones lyric is heroin.
i know some people see it that way, but i think they're exaggerating.

As for the alleged drug references....I can see how one can infer such references in this song, and probably they would be right.

As for the love=crack idea, please understand that crack (the product of free basing cocaine) wasn't even invented when this song was written. In this context I would liken "love" to be a sarcastic reference to an addiction or a craving. What do you think Ms. Sssoul?

Actually, I need to go back and read the lyrics to the whole song. I'm thinking now that this could very easily be simply about "love," you know, the old fashioned kind between a man and a woman and have nothing at all to do with drugs.....I'll report back.

Strange that you hear "Charlie" with sssoul...
I've never heard that....I'll watch out for it, often bootlegs is useful, if he says "child" at all shows, it's probably on the SF version too.
Mick used to include "Hot dog!!" live in concert, don't know why.

and as for Charlie ... i tried and tried to make it sound like "child" and it just won't, not in the studio track and not in concert.
by 89 he stopped singing anything at that point - it's just "you got to mix it, you got to fix it"
i think that was one of the outcomes of the famous incident when Charlie punched him into a plate of smoked salmon. :E

It goes like this:

Anyone else heard this? I wonder what THAT means. Both the "goose", and the Charlie. But I can imgaine Bowie with a "line" on his hand, I understand that.

So it doesn't substitute any lyrics.

i think this lyric is about love bein a bitch, all right - the whole number sounds just plain horny as a hog.
if some people feel like that about a drug, who am i to stop them -
and of course every good lyric has more than one layer of meaning -
but i don't know if we need to search for elaborately contrived drug references in *every* tune ...

but if Charlie is a reference to coke (in Erik's Bowie song as well?) then maybe the whole song is about
mixing coke with smack to reduce the chances of puking. personally i like it better as a plain all-out horny number. :E

with sssoul, I agree 100% with your last post. The "layer of meaning" comment is so true. I also think lots of energy is wasted searching for hidden meanings in these lyrics. A good writer will choose words that can evoke images in the mind of the reader, or in this case the listener, that enhances the message in the song (or poem, or story). Sometimes these carefully chosen words can have dual meanings. I like to think that writers (song writers, Mick Jagger, whomever) are more inclined to create these images in the listeners mind than they are to create a hidden message....although the effect on the listener can nevertheless be similar....

....and "kicking the stall all night" creates images in my mind of a stud horse, a stallion, doing what studs do, for crying out loud....not for being jacked up on coke.
