JJ Flash Live? w/ Brian
Posted by: bigfrankie ()

Hey check this out. I'm not sure how to do the link from YOUTUBE. This appears to be "live" but w/o an audience. I've never heard a version anything like this...........

Stunning. This is the very first performance of the song after the studio recording on April 20, 1968. A rare version of the song. You'll never see a closeup of Brian Jones playing a Telecaster anywhere else.

It's a strat , not a tele, that Brian is holding, right?

looked like a white tele to me; only saw it once tho and there wasn't a whole lot of guitar footage...but i think it was a gleamin' white ol' pre-CBS Fender tele...

Very cool! I could only ID the Tele that Brian was using but there wasn't enough that I could see of it to say if it was pre CBS or not. As to Keith's guitar, I couldn't make it out.

What a great film... is it a well-known clip? The first couple of minutes, there are as many cuts as a modern video. I started to get annoyed, then the middle section is only 1 or 2 cuts, as jagger starts dancing. Nice.

To my knowledge this is a promo video shot for the song. Basically what wouldve gone on MTV had it existed back in the day. Some of the footage from this is seen on 25x5.

Brian is definitely playing on Fender Telecaster and Keith is using Gibson Les Paul as he mainly did in the sixties. Audio part of the song sounds the same as it did in this well-known promo video.

No this is not the typical promor we see on 25x5 this is the one without make-up and they shot at least one more with makeup without the added whohoos and yeahyeahs. Same day. And there is at least one more with makeup, with whohoos and yeahyeahs added but from another angle where you cant see Brian play the song as on this one. Thanks for sharing, very very cool video indeed.

they tear it up. excellent performance. one reason it sounds so great is two guitars. now they use a guitar and and electric sitar? or something. i know on the studio version there isn't 2 guitars but no need to play it the same in concert. go back to the 2 guitar attack.

my computer is so skittish about letting me watch videos, so i'm only guessing which version you're talkin about -
is this the very raw "no-warpaint" one that they shot about two weeks before the better-known "painted" versions?
if so: yeah that is mighty hot. and there was a thread a while ago discussing that Tele Brian's got - i'll see if i can find it ...
yep, here it is: [iorr.org]

>> Keith is using Gibson Les Paul <<

isn't it the trippy-painted black 3PU LP Custom, like in the "warpaint" versions?

Keith, be well - all the way, baby, all the way

I haven't looked at it either...but isn't this a promo shot for German TV...Beat or something like that....March or April 1968 ?

according to a previous thread on the stones' various telecasters,
(which mentions these filmed promo sessions,)...
Mathjis sees this instrument as a 1966 Fender Tele, which would be a CBS model, as Fender was sold to CBS in '65.
so me wrong.
was this filmed in '67?

I have this clip on VHS, recorded it direct from the television some years ago when the norwegian channel NRK had a long interview with Bill Wyman. They showed both familiar and rare music videos, from The Stones and The Rythm Kings.

this is a moot point now...but brian just looked so cool in that video...just that brief shot and of him with the telecaster...all we can do is wonder...

This video is kind of strange, because Mick looks very....strange in his face. He's almost swollen (is that the correct word?) like a spunge loaded with water, and his eyes are wierd. He must have been on a wild party just before the shooting.

Micks probably on speed and coke, makes him swollen in the face.

>> was this filmed in '67? <<

it was filmed on april 27th 1968, but that Tele (or anyway one that looks just like it)
can be seen in Keith's hands in some photos from 67. which (obviously) doesn't mean it's not a pre-67 model.

Keith, be well - all the way, baby, all the way

You're probably thinking about the same picture as me...from the "Not Fade Away - Stones collection book". Keith makes an almost whistle-grin with his mouth next to a microphone, in a dotty shirt.

Three different Promo videos exist of that song...

All are different audio...some live, some studio with live vox, and one pretty much the straight studio...some painted, some not. ALL GROOVY!

Not really sure about the sound on this one. It's definitely "pre-war-paint," and mick appears to be singing the lead vocal live. But there are back-up vocals and a big organ that must be pre- or post-recorded. So it could be live vocal over taped backing, even if the taped backing is different from the released single. So based only on the video we still can't be sure brian is really playing that tele, or just miming with it.

Does he play those high licks on the studio version? I had thought the guitars were all keith.

krh4l, there is more than 1 guitar on the studio version. There are lots!

moot: adjective...debatable or hypothetical...it would be a debatable point if the band were to carry on with brian....

More like "beyond debate, because undecidable." But it's often used now to mean "not worth debating anymore, because the situation has changed."
