All-Star Band Featuring The Stones
Posted by: ohnonotyouagain ()

I was watching Rock 'N' Roll Circus again and enjoying Keith's bass playing in the one off supergroup with Lennon and Clapton. That and the thread about Nicky Hopkins (surely the best rock keyboard player ever) made me think: who would you pick for an all-star rock band like the one in the DVD? Living or dead, makes no difference as it's all in your head anyway.

How would you fill these spots:

Lead vocalist/frontman
Lead guitar
Two rhythm guitarists
Keyboards
Bass
Drums

I think I'd have to go with Mick on lead vocals. He's got to be the best front man ever, and certainly you need Keith on rhythm guitar along with John Lennon. John Entwistle on bass and Nicky Hopkins on keyboards were among the best on their respective instruments, so those are easy choices. I think I'd have to go with Jimmy Page on lead guitar, narrowly edging out Jimi Hendrix. On drums, Keith Moon by a hair over John Bonham.

"Nicky Hopkins (surely the best rock keyboard player ever)"
No Onnya: that would be Jon Lord.

But I cant put together an all-star band, that would be the Stones.

Was he in Black Sabbath as well for a while? I just got a Sabbath compilation and have been listening to it on and off.

Also I remember when ELP got back together without Carl Palmer they got Cozy Powell so they didn't have to change the name of their group, or the monogramed towels on the tour plane.

I pass on the post-Rainbow-Qs on Powell.
I followed him as a solo artist and in Rainbow.
Might find some answers on his site, alas I aint got the
time to surf around there right now...

Lead vocalist/frontman: Mick Jagger.
Lead guitar: Ronnie Wood.
Two rhythm guitarists: Keith Richards and Brian Jones.
Keyboards: Nicky Hopkins.
Bass: Darryll Jones.
Drums: Charlie Watts.

You may think I'm lame. But I know that these people together makes something very special, whereas a band consisting of Clapton, Keith Moon, Freddie Mercury, Jaco Pastorius, Thelonius Monk, Joe Satriani and Ritchie Blackmore wouldn't be guaranteed to do that.

That's a pretty good band all right, although I'd prefer Wyman over Jones in that band.

Just for fun, I'll throw a circus band together:

Lead vocalist/frontman - Mick Jagger

Lead guitar - Johnny Winter

Two rhythm guitarists - Keith Richards, Stevie Ray Vaughan

Keyboards - Garth Hudson

Bass - Flea

Drums - John Bonham

I have no idea what the &^%$#@ they'd sound like, but they wouldn't lack for talent.

Lead vocalist/frontman: Mick Jagger
Lead guitar: Eric Clapton
Two rhythm guitarists: Keith Richards / Rick Parfitt
Keyboards - Mike Sanchez
Bass - Bill Wyman
Drums - Charlie Watts

How's that for an all-star band!

SRV as rhythm?

Lead vocalist/frontman: Mick Jagger
Lead guitar: Angus Young
Rhythm guitarist: Keith Richards
Keyboards: Elton John - but if I were Mick, I'd say "Listen tubby, just sit there, shut up and tickle the ivories! Don't try to upstage me and don't call my best friend Keith 'a monkey with arthritis' EVER AGAIN!!"
Bass: Bill Wyman
Drums: Stewart Copeland

That's my all-star band. smiling smiley

With Johnny Winter on Lead, I think it would work real well... sort of just 2 leads weaving, really...

After all they both played with the same rhythm section (Double Trouble) for many years so they certainly can have a compatible groove.

And we know Johnny can play Stones leads real well.

Hey BOTB, who has taken Easton's place in CCRevisited? Is the "New" Cars thing temporary or has he left (or maybe borrowed like Ronnie was from the Faces)?

Easton will also be playing in a Cyndi Lauper cover band with her original bass player and drummer. Coming soon to a bowling alley near you! Ever since he took a bath on the Super Bowl, Easton has to make a buck any way he can.

From one smart ass to another, ohno, that's great! A couple of questions for ya -

1. Remember when McCartney put together the Rockestra? Several guitars (Page and Gilmore were two of them), basses (Macca and Entwhistle among them) and drummers to create a huge sound. They didn't record but 2 songs on Back To The Egg, but I really liked the idea.

2. Heard anything from the concertmaster (drake) about Atlanta?

Vaugely, now that you mention it. I hadn't thought about that in years and years. As a big Zeppelin fan I'll have to go back and check that out.

Not a peep. I guess he's real busy with his studio, school, work, etc. Either that or he's joined a gang and is busy putting caps in people's asses.

His post about the trouble at the studio was interesting to say the least. I suggested the name D-Diddy, but think Dr. Drake might be better especially if he's holding the Chronic!smiling smiley

You might say the release of the Atlanta show has been "chronically delayed."

But the sound may be "chronically-sonically-enhanced".

Yes, we will really be able to hear those high frequencies.

I think I saw an advertisement for the Cars show recently, so I'd be suprised if Easton has left this soon in the game...

As for who replaced him in CCRevisited, they rave about the guy on their website but I've not seen them live to voice an opinion...

But one opinion I'm highly confident of: Elliot Easton will be an extremely difficult act to follow. CCRevisited concerts were worth it just to hear him play, let alone all the great Creedence stuff.

So let's hope the new guy is great in his own way.
