My worst:

1) Love Train
2) Get up stand up
3) My girl (one of the classic songs they must forbit to cover it because nobody can beat the original version)

The worst live performed covers:

all that Motown blues/soul stuff: Night Time, Mr. Pitiful, Love Train, Can't Turn You Loose, Ain't Too Proud To Beg, Everybody Needs Somebody To Love, Going To A Go Go, That's How Strong My Love Is, Can't Get Next To You, etc.

I can't get into these songs! Why are they doing always stuff like this? Thought they are a Rock And Roll band and not a soul band! Why are they not doing some Chuck Berry covers or something like that?

I agree with you, most of that soul stuff they do I think is only for the US market,Althoug I like some of them.

Man !! what's wrong with "Everybody Needs Somebody To Love"
I do like all the Chuck Berry song's.

One mentioned "My Girl"love this song, only it doesn't fit in the collection of Stones records (wander who's idea this was ?)

Funny how people like one song and others don't like.

Really I don't like "Just My Imagination" sorry.

Tee best is "Like A Rollin Stone"
The faked live version of "I`v been living yoy too long" should never had the added screaming audience noice.
The rest is good enough for me.

I used to have a Live CD of theirs that had some live BBC recordings from 64 and then a bunch of s****y recrodings from '64 shows

The BBC part had good covers: Route 66, Mona, Cops and Robbers. I think that was a chuck berry song? has anyone else heard that? It had You Better Move on too. Thats a cover isnt it? those are definetley the best live recordings ive heard with Brian in the band.

because they like them and because theyre great songs

Thought they are a Rock
> And Roll band and not a soul band!

they're the Rolling Stones. I didnt realise they had to be 'confined' to one narrow field of music. If you want to be a purist about it, they were a blues band before being anything else. Including a rock n roll band.

Why are they
> not doing some Chuck Berry covers or something

probably because, whilst I like to hear Berry covers myself, its not 1964 anymore and theyve musically progressed

Very interesting thread.
For me the Stones are a "black music" band vs the Beatles which were influenced by "white rockers".
Look at the first albums and the BBC sessions, most of the covers are black : blues, rythm and blues later soul, disco, reggae and even funk.
Except 20 flight rock no Eddy Cockhran, Carl Perkins, Gene Vincent...
So i disagree with midnrambler : all these soul covers come from their roots.
First LP : Route66, I just want..., Honest i do, Mona, Little by little, King bee (their best cover), Can i get a witness, You can make it if you try and Walking the dog.
Not fade away is an other exception : white music played with a "black" groove.

In the same time, the Beatles used to cover white rockers music.
That's why i prefer the Stones.

No love for Get Up Stand Up?

Just My Imagination is the best.

I can do without Going to a Go Go cause the song just doesn't do anything for me.

Too many good ones to mention them.

I hate Harlem Shuffle!

What about 'I Wanna Be Your Man'? That's my personal favourite. I also like 'Talkin 'Bout You', unlike somebody else, and what about 'Time Is On My Side'?

You guys are reminding me of some good ones.

I would have to add Mercy Mercy and Not Fade Away in after reading your comments. Not Fade Away is amazing to me. They really just made that one their own.

Yeah, I had forgotten about Harlem Shuffle. That's in the top for me. Especially the Dutch remix - haarlem shuffle!

put me in the trash!

Interesting question.
It was written bt Lennon/McCartney, but recorded okt 7 by the Stones and released their 7" nov 1. 1963
The Beatles taped it okt 23. and released it on the Lp With the beatles 22. nov same year.

But what is the Original?
I mean it is a Stones song.

Many of the so-called Motown songs - Mr. Pitiful, I Can't Turn You Loose, etc. -are actually Stax/Volt songs. The southern soul men of Stax are not as slickly produced as their Motown counterparts. Greasier, more soulful, just about perfect. See Otis Redding, Sam and Dave, Carla Thomas, etc..

BTW, Stax has a great 4 disc boxset. A 9 disc one, too, but most of the goodies are on the 4 disc one.
