Keith changes his guitar tuning for some Live songs

Hi

for some songs Keith changes his guitar tuning on stage since the early seventies until now

You gotta move : open D ( US Tour 69) to standard tuning ( Tour 75-76 )
It´s Only Rock´n´Roll : open G ( Tour 75-76) to standard tuning (Tour 89 onwards)

Did he ever play Rocks off and Gimme Shelter in open G live on stage? Now he play it in standard tuning, if i am not mistaken

Regards
Thomas

I think it's in open G with the low E string unchanged (that is, tuned to E).

What about GS stuido? Is it in standard tuning? Hard one.

I think the low E is dropped to a D or a D# on the studio GS - something to create that dissonance.

On the albums, GS is in open D tuning, Rocks Off is standard tuning.

OK thanks; ehrm, how do you tune it in open D? He does it with five strings on GS right?

Does he play Gimme Shelter on the US Tour 69 in standard tuning and Rocks Off at the Northamerican Tour 72 as well?

I did not know that Keith used open D tuning for GS on Let I Bleed so I will have to try it. He has always played it live, so far as I know, in standard tuning . Same with Rocks Off. Open D is spelled DADF#AD from low to high by the way and it uses all 6 strings.

<how do you tune it in open D? He does it with five strings on GS right?>

Open D is the same as Open E, only tuned down.

Surprised over Mathijs comments cause I've always thought that Gimme Shelter was played with standard tuning and Rocks Off in open G with the low string tuned down to E (making the dissonance in the intro).I used to play them that way live and it sounded very close to the original version.
I am interested to get the tabs from Mathijs.

Mathijs is right. Live, GS has always been played in standard tuning though. Rocks Off has always been played in standard tuning. You hear that the riffs are a little weaker than that of Open G

Thanks Dandelion ,I'll try to figure it out but it's already 30 years that I am playing them that way..old habits die hard!

There is an OpenG guitar track in the original Rocks Off...

<There is an OpenG guitar track in the original Rocks Off...>

Where? This song is so "two-guitar-ish" as it gets. An none of them are tuned open.

Rocks off: 1 guitar standard, one OpenG. The intro riff is distinctly open G, but with the low string ON, which Keith usually removes. You can hear it being used in the opening riff, on the 5th thru 8th notes.

What's distinctly open G about the intro? It can easily be played in standard.

The Hal Leonard book of Exile tabs says it's open G except for the low E remaining at E, as I and olympia said above. But I looked through it, and there's no real reason to retune. All the riffs are basic standard tuning riffs. In the tab (which is solid but by no means absolute), keith's guitar doesn't even hit the top string more than a couple of times.

Actually thanks for pointing that out, I believe the riff is played by both KR and MT...KR plays around the 9th fret in open G, while MT plays the E (0 0 1 2 2 0), then E/A change, then the F# barre @ the 2nd fret to the B.
