He got sick & tired of Jagger/Richards taking the lion's share of the $$$
and song writing credits. bottom-line!

I also think the onset of the fear of flying later in life had more to do with his departure than is commonly accepted. you really can't be in this world-touring band without jumping into an airplane alot.

This was another in a long line of great "career moves" in Rock N Roll...

Let's add:

1) John Frusciante quitting the Chili Peppers

2) Mick Taylor quitting the Rolling Stones

3) Jason Newsted quitting Metallica

Just a brilliant career move smiling smiley

Bayou:

Assuming you're being sarcastic - I think you're off-track. Seems to me Bill is happier in his life since the departure than he ever was before. That's what it is all about, ain't it?

Do you have his full schedule?--he can't possibly be touring as much as the Stones--their tours go on for almost two years.

Fear of flight.
Weary of groupieshaggin or of his sexoholism.
Wants to develop other sides in life.
Pleased with thirty good years with the Stones.

Bill had an interview in Polsish Radio 3 before polish RK concert. He told that all the money he has got from Rolling Stones is 2mln dollars in bank. He said it's not a mystery. So probably he could be a little sad about mick's and keith's fortune.

I guess Bill was fed up and felt it was time for a new challange.
I remember an interview some years ago, he told the stones had done the same thing for about 20 years, and he needed a change. I know Bill always liked to play clubs and small crowds, and the stadium band stones turned out to be, created a huge distance to the audience. I really respect Bill for what he's doing today, touring around with his band and playing the music he wants to play in front of small crowds. He could still be with the stones and earned millions, but his love to the music comes first.

Most probably he was sick and tired of playing Satisfaction for the 1000th time in a stadium.

IORR has got the answer to this question.
Why Bill Wyman left The Rolling Stones
[iorr.org]

This article was published 10 years ago!
Now the situation is different.
He hated and hates flying.
His touring is mostly done in Europe by coach/bus.

I wouldn't say that leaving a band after being it in some 30+ years, and reaching 60 years old, can be called a "career move" anymore. He just retired from his life time job - a job that made him a millionare and famous. Now he is enjoying the fruits of his career, doing - without any outer forcement - anything that pleases him most (books, DVDs, music, archeology, and most of all: spends time with his family) and not having any bosses around to tell what to do and when. I saw in my town (Tampere, Finland) with his "own" band, and my God, did he look happy and relaxed.

I would say that Bill Wyman feels he has done his part of history (as can be seen in his nostalgic "Rolling With The Stones" book). What Mick and Keith plus Charlie do nowadays is not to add anything to their musical legacy but just milk the last billions out of it. In a decade time or so, no one will remember any musical contribution of The Stones from the mid 80's on. Only few big numbers of top ten grossing tours. It's only that $$$$ what Bill be left without.

No one can either compare the departure of Mick Taylor to that of Wyman. When Taylor left he was convinced that the band will fell apart (due to Keith's condition, the band was tired and getting old-fashionable, Jagger's solo plans, etc.). One could say that THAT was a bad career move. When Bill left, he was sure that the band will go on endlessly. At that time they had already discovered the formula how to continue their success (they had made a come back by being the Biggest Nostalgy Band in THe World, playing the same set of 20-30 year old hits to masses = $$$$$$$). Bill just had it enough.
