Once and forever: Stones songs in Open G
Posted by: Lorenz ()
Date: January 17, 2006 18:56

So I tuned my guitar to Open G, got the capo handy, and now I'm gonna sit down and learn all the Stones songs in open g. Anyone wants to help me finding all those songs - and if you can contribute some tabs or help, very appreciated!

to start:

Brown Sugar
Start Me Up
Moonlight Mile
Wild Horses
Happy

Lorenz, why don't you do it the other way 'round?

Try to play the whole catalog in open G, when it gets too awkward, you need the

standard tuning winking smiley

I think "Wild Horses" is standard tuning with a Nashville strung guitar. The four lowest strings are strung with a smaller gauge and tuned an octave higher than usual. Sounds similar to a 12-string when played against a standard tuned. Common studio technique in Nashville, used by the Eagles, etc.

Wild Horses apparently also has an open G tuned guitar, see [www.guitaretab.com] .

There is also an acoustic open G there.
Plus the electric standard tuning

Wild Horses from Stripped is definitely in G - and this is the best version, imo!

Lots of Stones songs have 'open g' in them, but they nearly all have a standard tuned guitar (or two) in there as well...and there's usually an acoustic in there....oh and Mick singing...and Charlie on drums...and Ronnie on guitar...and Keith.... smiling smiley

Ian, what chords are you using for YCAGWYW - are you playing it in open g?

YCAGWYW is open G, capo at 5th. Play the open chord (= actually C) and hammer on/off the 2nd position on the 3rd string, then play the F-chord.

Well, as previously mentioned, the Stones play YCAGWYW in open G when they play live. Personally I think the song sounds better on an acoustic in 'open e' with the capo on eighth fret...which is how we play it...

You'll need the C and F chord mainly...and there's a few little riffs in there to learn, but it's not hard...oh, and a D chord...

Ian.

I have quite a few guitars - but the're all in G.
I leave the standard tuning to my guitar buddy.

Thank you very much Ian! Saw that website once and forgot it again smiling smiley
The main problem is really that I only have one guitar, so I constantly have to change tunings, that's very annoying. So I decided to learn the open-g parts of all the songs and then change to standard for the solos or licks and whatever...

Thanks for YCAGWYW, I always played it in open g, capo 5th fret too and it sounded good smiling smiley
