How many touring visits to Chicago?
Posted by: bv ()
Date: January 4, 2006 01:12

I was asked this question, and just to double check my own estimate it would be great to have comments on this one. How many times did the Stones visit Chicago IL to perform shows up to now. I mean coming, performing one or more shows at one or more venues, and then leaving. Fall 97 is one visit. Spring 98 is one visit. And so on.

Since I have followed the Stones:

July, 1978 Soldier Field
Fall, 1981 Rockford, ILL (90 Miles)
Nov, 1981 Rosemont Horizon (and Checkerboard)
Sept, 1989 East Troy, WIS (100 Miles or so)
Fall 1994 Soldier Field
Fall 1997 Soldier Field (and Double Door)
Spring 1998 United Center
April 1999 United Center
Sept 2002 Comiskey Park, United Center, Aragon
Jan 2003 United Center
Sept 2005 Soldier Field
Jan, 2006 United Center

There have some solo Keith and Ronnie shows...

Did I miss any??

This question has come up in a slightly different form... "what City has had the most Stones shows"... awhile back...

As I recall the #1 "venue" was actually the bay area of SanFrancisco, Oakland, San Jose.

Chicago was a close 2nd or 3rd.

I wouldn't count the Rockford show in '81 as a Chicago show because the Stones played three shows in Chicago one month after the Rockford show. It's really not the same area of Illinois other than it's northern Illinois. The East Troy shows in Wisconsin would be a better contender because the Stones never played Chicago in '89. Fans from Chicago had to go to East Troy, which is partly why they did three shows in Wisconsin.

BV, wouldn't this site have the info: www.toru.com?

There was one show in March 99 and one in April. Two visits.

I remember that one of these shows... think it was the last one on the No Security Tour... was like a show where Charlie's Visa was going to expire the next day...

Like they had one day to play a gig in Chicago then he had to leave the country, anyone remember that ??

That was in 98.

I was at that show: April '98. There was no "web" song that night, which might explain your story of the visa-- the show had to end sooner than normal. I think Gazza was saying that the U.S. shows in the Spring of '98 were the beginning of the era of really high ticket prices.

No Security had two visits in 1999 Chicago:
United Center, Mar 26
United Center, Apr 12

What I don't understand is why they did not visit Chicago in 1989. I mean East Troy is a totally different market. Did they just stall that part of the country? Was the city of Chicago closed for half a year? We are talking about one of the largest markets for the Stones in the world. They do always 2-4 shows there, and these days Chicago is one of RS top 3 US cities next to NYC and Boston...

I don't know why they missed Chicago that time. Maybe the Bears had games in Soldier Field that weekend and the Stones couldn't fit Chicago in their schedule any other time.

I do remember the drive was a bitch and I had a DUI at the time, so my date had to drive there and back. I don't think she liked it so much. Plus it rained all day and during the concert. I found a boot of the show and listen to it all the time !!!!

Boston has had a lot since Steel wheels. But there was a 14 year absence after my First Stones show in 1975 ( Boston Garden which there was two dates). The Boys did not come back until Sept 89 for Steel wheels 3 dates and that was in Foxborough 30 miles south of Boston. Voodoo and BTB were also in Foxborough. The Boys did not actually play in the City of Boston again until No Security March 99. SO there was really a 24 year Absence.

this was true. They cut the show short and apparently were in Canada before midnight!

sort of. The first actual TOUR with those sky high prices was No Security in '99, however some of the indoor shows in 1998 had ticket prices that were considerably in excess of the $65 or so that was normal for that tour

Madison Square Garden - Jan 1998
The Joint, Las Vegas - Feb 1998 (I think the prices were $500 and $250!)
United Centre, Chicago - April 1998

I would imagine that the MGM shows in Vegas in November were probably more expensive than the rest of the 97 leg, as they were the only non-stadium tour shows on that leg of the tour. This may also have been the case in '94 in the same city, on a tour which was otherwise exclusively stadiums (and maybe even Atlantic City '89 where the same applied). maaybe someone who was there can verify

the weird thing about the spring 98 shows were that it was only Chicago where this new ticket pricing applied. It was a brief 5-date tour which took place originally in order to reschedule some shows that had been postponed in January - the stadium show in Montreal was cancelled and tickets then redistributed for 2 arena shows, plus there was a rescheduled arena show in Toronto and a dome show in Syracuse. All of these shows were normally priced, then they added the Chicago date which had prices which bore more relation to the No Security shows a year later

MGM in 94 (two shows) and 97 (one show) had the top price of $300.

How about the show that was supposed to be at Comiskey in '76? It was listed on Ticketron and then pulled when the show cancelled.

Yes, we were talking only U.S. venues from VooDoo Lounge forward as I recall.

there was no show 'cancelled' in 1976 as the Stones didnt play anywhere in America that year, let alone Chicago

Unless ticketron listed something by mistake, but the Stones never announced any US shows that year

Although I was in California for the '89 tour, I grew up in Chicago and live there now. So many bands used to play East Troy only, we didn't question going up there - it was literally considered a Chicago location. Stevie Ray Vaughn died in a helicopter accident after playing a show there.

We didn't mind, especially when the Dead would play, because we'd make a weekend out of it and camp at the venue. I would've loved to see the Stones there - the seating section is pretty small and the lawn is narrow but goes up pretty high. I'm sure they make more money playing in the city, itself.
