She Was Hot and Tie You Up - fantastic! Best of the actual 1980s recording along with She's So Cold!

I think Adam Sweeting's review is very good. Even he hates WHY and FOB. smiling smiley

Yeah they even used SS riff again on RAAHP, but I still love IMBH.

King or queen of abbreviations, what the hell is an " SS riff " ?

The SS riff is the "Soul Survivor" riff.
The Stones kind of re-used that riff a couple more times. On "It Must be Hell" is verges on self plagiarism. On "Rock and a hard place" it's a little trickier because that one was obviously written by Jagger;there are many more parts to the song; plus the actual riff, harmonically gets "minorized" a bit.

Let's do a song by song review of UC
Undercover - strong opening cut; great riff, and IMO produced very well; love the f/x; all the percussion is right at home on a track driven by a Central American theme - yet in all this it never loses the guitars
She Was Hot - about as good a Stones 45 as one could ask for. This one would fit in with the run of "19th Nervous Brekdown", "Paint it Black" and "Let's spend the Night"; it has the sleezy lyrics, the Berry riffing dual guitars, but when that chorus kicks in you get a complete change of gears: the words are romantic, and the piano just makes it. Plus we get that final crescendo culminating in a "cold Chicago ni-i-ight" going to Charlie's drum rolls. I compare this song to "Rocks Off" in that it has the best of both worlds - greasy rock, and wonderful melody
Tie You Up - Not even sure where to start; no earthshaking 'parts' yet this must be one of the finest grooves the Stones have laid down since "Casino Boogie" and the "Ventilator". The electric piano is ideal for the sound; and the boys throw in some choice guitar licks. Words are appropriately filthy. But my favorite part since Day 1 has always been that break " s'gonna really tie you up...BOOOMP!" I just love that drum, then congas roll back in.
Wanna Hold You - I think the Beatles comparison was so obvious that reviewers could not even mention it soon enough. It's a good little song, and I like the idea of Jgger playing the drums as they were working it up; but it's not one of the best. Still in retrospect now, I welcome and uptempo Keith number.
Feel On Baby - I see many don't like this. It was actually my fgave track for a long time. I love those verses; I love the harp, I love Keith's vocals in there. Those percussion parts, the electric ones, is stuff we scoff at in US and UK, but in Jamaica studios this is pretty f*ckin authentic.
Too Much Blood I think the best way to take this one is with a shot of humor, and as an invitation the hit the dancefloor; back in ..if you were a dance in 80's. The horns are good, and I think Jagger is great on this one. I am surprised to have seen it on those rehearsal charts of the Stones.
Pretty Beat Up - In some other thread a while back it was said that Ronnie solo has done this song a lot more justice; given it more definition. It's a jam.
Too Tough - underrated in a big way. This is a tight number; could see the Stones pulling it out in stadiums and taking it major. Very tight rhythm section.
All the Way Down - one of my faves from the album. Great chorus with all singing; down to that mini-shattered rap he does.
It Must Be Hell - this is the only straight misfire IMO. Do not like the song, think the production and arrangment is lousy.
But UC is a favorite album of mine. It would be great to read a review song by song from someone who does not like the album.

An excellent summation of the albums and the tracks that comprise it. You are absolutely spot on with Too Tough - it is a tight rocker, with a great riff and awesome 80's guitar solo.

P.S. I've broken my fascination with Too Tough, and am now listening to Lies on repeat. The 1978 live versions on Handsome Girls are a guitar-fest, and feast for the ears.

Great album, no weak tracks. I even like Too Much Blood. But it is way too long.

Keith's guitarwork on Tie You Up is some of the best he has done ever.

You all have me eager to go out and buy the Universal remaster. I still have the Columbia edition. I wish I'd picked up the Virgin edition, because I hear that one is best, and I can't find any used copies of that one anywhere... Perhaps I'll pick up the U. edition this afternoon after work. Love this album!
