PW is a traditional 12-bar blues, so a little more "ordinary", but the Stones lay a great Stones-stamp on it; it has a good end-of-60s, newly heavily amplified Stones sound to it, so its feel is kind of fresh and exciting.
While PS I think is more of a re-creation of a special style of singing and also more country-ish acoustic guit. accompaniment, which Keith excelled at (Aftermath). It also has a more intricate construction. I prefer PS.
i urge folks to seek out the 9-minute version of Prodigal Son done by the author, Robert Wilkins, in the early sixties (his original version was done in the 20's). It's THIS version the Stones obviously were aping. But, here you get about 15 verses....very, very cool stuff. As much as I enjoy the Stones' version, it adds nothing to this version....

Calling Rockman!
Was this the version that you reccomended as well?
T&A: Is this available on CD or only on vinyl? (I'm no longer vinyl-ready) Can you tell us any more about where this version comes from?
Always had a little weakness for the Rev.'s work...
that Newport disc is something of a companion piece to the three-disc set available. there's some overlap...worth having all four discs - some great historical performances contained.
