Inflatable Giant Dolls on VL Stage
Posted by: dead.flowers ()

There's still this big unanswered question on my mind:

Can someone still name all of those inflatable giant figures that would appear about halfway through the show (with which song)?

Are there any footage or pics around?

Jesus Christ
Elvis Presley
Lord Krishna
Marilyn Monroe
?
?
?

Thank you very, very much, folks!

right: in 1989 it was HTW; in 1990 it was HTW and SFM (those Urban Jungle dogs were charming!)
and the question is about the Voodoo Lounge inflatables (1994/95). i knew erikjjf would respond :E
on that [www.stufish.com] site it's Photo 11 under "reality" you want [passing popcorn]

Thank you, eric, for the link. Yes, sssoul, it's pic 11, but I find it hard to individually identify the figures from that pic.

The question remains to name all of them VL figures. And, thanks a lot for the popcorn.

Great clip, Swaystones, thanks. That was Urban Jungle 1990 in England, OK, and nice to see how the boys used to be, but which gig was it actually?

>> respond to what ? <<
... respond to the question that dead.flowers asked about the VL tour.

>> I don't see any dog in my video <<

the Urban Jungle dogs were inflated during SFM, not HTW.
i am cognizant that they are not in the clip you posted, but it's okay to mention them, i hope! :E

are you sure they're all meant to be specific individuals?
the goat's head for example has a lot of associations, from Azazel through Pan and Satan to Goats Head Soup :E

I considered these inflatable dolls to refer to the passage
I watched with glee While your kings and queens
Fought for ten decades For the gods they made

I guess it's Maria, the pope, Elvis end some hindu god I wouldn't know anything about.
I have no idea who the bold chap is supposed to be.

Here's the Miami recording:

Sssoul, I really do enjoy your mails, they are highly sophisticated.

No, I wouldn't say they are all specific individuals, but some, of course, are. What is needed would be a decent picture to have a closer look at them. The pics and clips I've seen so far are too diffuse.

I would appreciate your further analysis or interpretation once the list of figures is at hand.

I was at a few VL shows, and seem to recall the dolls only during HTW. And just female looking dolls with open legs. No Jesus or JFK...
Why would anyone blow up Jesus during HTW?

Thanks for the hints, marco.

The "ten decades", btw, refer to "The Hundred Years' War (French: Guerre de Cent Ans). A prolonged conflict lasting from 1337 to 1453 between two royal houses for the French throne, which was vacant with the extinction of the senior Capetian line of French kings. The two primary contenders were the House of Valois and the House of Plantagenet, also known as the House of Anjou. The House of Valois claimed the title of King of France, while the Plantagenets from England claimed to be Kings of France and England. Plantagenet Kings were the 12th century rulers of the Kingdom of England, and had their roots in the French regions of Anjou and Normandy. French soldiers fought on both sides, with Burgundy and Aquitaine providing notable support for the Plantagenet side." Joan of Arc being among the cast of characters in that play. [en.wikipedia.org]

Yes, PR 2000, it's only natural to get one's head down on the dolls with open legs. spinning smiley sticking its tongue out But I'm afraid you've gotten mixed up with the tours, the open-legged girls were there during HTW in Urban Jungle 1990, which you can see a bit up in this thread, and the 1995 VL tour featured that whole gang of characters in giant inflatable shape, which I eyewitnessed at least in Hanover and Schüttorf. (If my recollection doesn't play tricks on me.)

The Cage..
Don't the Stones themselves use "The Cage" as a punchline? It's in one of those Docu- DVDs.

Let's call in the experts.

Vishnu: If he has so many arms and legs, imo he should be Shiva.

Voodoo God: Is that how he could be named? In some pics I took him for Charlie Chaplin.

Priest/ Pope: Which?

So I try to summarise, from left to right:

Lord Shiva
Voodoo Character
Virgin Mary
Goat's Head
The Pope
Dalai Lama
Elvis Presley

Amazing, how we keep ourselves busy.

amazing how the Rolling Stones keep us busy - hail hail, eh? :E

sorry for rerunning your doubts about it being Vishnu, dead.flowers - that is: i'm glad we think alike,
but sorry i type so slow. but i don't know if Shiva's normally got ten arms either,
or which Hindu deity would properly be pink. (isn't Shiva normally white and Vishnu blue?)
maybe it's not meant too literally.

>> from left to right ... <<

in Doc's daylight photo isn't the pope/priest next to the voodoo character, not fully inflated?
in Photo 11 i don't see the voodoo character at all - maybe it alternated with the pope/priest?
