OT: John Lennon 1940-1980

Can't believe it was 25 years ago today that Lennon was shot.

Sorry to all you beatle bashers, but I wanted to mention this on this site.
I was only 3 when it happened, but my dad was a massive beatles fan, so, in a way I grew up with them as well; at least, I grew up listening to them.

A few years ago I was visiting New York, and went to strawberry fields in central park, what a really nice peaceful place, people just sitting there, relaxing, reflecting.

Hope they are havin' a hell of a jam up in the 'Heaven's music studio'.

John Lennon 1940-1980. Today only Lennon music playing in my house. At the moment: Instant Karma.

I visited Strawberry Fields in 2002. As you mentioned, a very peaceful place.

RIP John.

I was only 10 when I heard of his death. My sister and I wondered why our mother was crying. Being as young as I was, I didn't know who John Lennon was. I didn't even know who the Beatles were. But now I know. I also know that 25 years ago on this day the world lost a man who was, quite arguably, one of the greatest musicians in rock 'n' roll history. Not to mention an icon. Rest In Peace John.

I heard that Mark chapman is coming out of jail soon. I think it will be better for him to just stay there because there are a lot of people still angry at him!

Cheers,

The irony of that statement is that John would probably not agree with you. If you wish to honor him, then remember how lived rather than how he died.

I think a lot of us were devastated by Lennon's senseless death.
There is a very good PBS special about this "The Man Who Shot John Lennon",
about the alleged Holden Caulfield/ Catcher in the Rye angle. The killer
was a real jerk off, probably just looking for attention, as he acted
out the story in his own twisted way. I understood he was locked
up as criminally insane, and since he's never been "cured",
can't be released. Anybody else know anything about this,
I don't really understand American law?

Anyway, John Lennon RIP. I suspect we lost alot of great music,
writng amd art, as he would've matured over the years: the
voice of a great rock generation spokesman that's never been
replaced. We are all the worse off for his untimely death.

I wonder; what has the response been among younger music fans,
when they play all his music today? Would he still seem at all
revelvant or of interest to them too?

Nice to have a thread about a beatle without the usual bashing here. My deep respect to all posters.

R.I.P. John Lennon

Poor John. We miss ya.

Listening to him singing to Sean on Beautiful Boy brings tears to my eyes every time.
Also, I can't believe it's already been four years last week (or so) for George Harrison.

Personally, I feel very fortunate to be alive at the same time as all these great musicians. Think of the new generations that will grow to love their music and never be able to experience having one of them put out a new record or seeing them in concert.

Wasn't looking too good, but I was feeling real well.

Rock solid mate. I love the beatles and the stones in about equal measures, not ashamed to admit it on a stones forum, and i'm really glad that (so far) no bad-mouthing has occured. Lennon Legend indeed...

The great John Lennon was robbed from all of us.

Yeah Strawberry Fields is a beautiful place. Didn't realise you walked 2 minutes across the road from where he was shot and you're there. Seems weird that something so terrible happened so closely to such a quiet and reflective area.

Had to do the pilgrimage and stand out front of the Dakota building a few months back. Felt very odd. Glad I did it but not again.

As for RIP - he ain't resting anywhere. He'll be out there somewhere giving somebody the sh its.....or at least I hope he is.

:0)

Have you ever lent somebody $20 and never seen them again? It was probably worth it.

I remember I was watching Monday Night Football on December 8, 1985 when an announcement was made that John had been shot and killed. It was shocking, hard to believe.

This evening I was driving in my car listening to the Magical Mystery tour CD when, at precisely 7:20 PM (which would have been 10:20 in New York, the time he was shot) the song "All You Need is Love" came on. How sadly ironic, there was John singing such lyrics. I was in NYC last week and visited Strawberry Fields in Central Park, and walked by the Dakota. It reminded me of what a sad and tragic story it is. R.I.P. John Lennon.

I thought about Lennon on Wednesday after reading some articles about the anniversary. All day Thursday it had slipped my mind. I went on a walk with a girl, and afterwards I went to a party and everyone was talking about John. In hindsight, I think John was looking over me for a minute when I was with that girl.

Yes, I was also watching Monday Night Football in a hotel room in Guadalajara, waiting for my dad.

Couldn't bealive Mr Howard Cosselle. When he announced that John was shot and wounded I was like in outter space, but that said I had hope. Later they announce his death.

Mu father found me in tears, then he realise what just happend....Very sad day.

Lennon got killed and ar first I want Capman to pay for it. Then I listen to "Imagine" and realize that thies would not be doing Lennon's life justice.
There are better, harder ways.
