How do you store your collection?
Posted by: rayone ()

I know a lot of people here would have large collections of cd's.

But how do you store them?

I have some in a book case in cases and sorted by artists and year. Others are in boxes and more in plastic sleeves in cupboards.

How do you store them?

Just curious to see other methods.

I know some are fanatical about keeping them in order and others have them all over the place.

My CDs are thrown onto a shelf of a built-in bookcase in a wall of my flat in absolutely no order whatsoever. I have to do a lot of searching when I want to hear a particular tune. My vinyl is another matter. Each record is filed alphabetically by artist, then by date of release, and kept in peach crates procured from a local grocery. They are covered by tarps to discourage my cat when he thought he found a new scratching post. The few cassettes I have left are similarly arranged in their own holder.

i keep them all in a vault at the bank. they are perfectly "safe" there, but admittedly not particularly accessible.

I have one wooden cabinet for the vinyl, another cabinet for the official releases and a third cabinet for the boots and DVDs.Basically, it's a nightmare!!

I have "organized" them so many times that I have no ide what is where. Basically they are where I can see them if I look hard enough. I stumble over them all the time because they are literally everywhere. That's why I am constantly thinking I have something that I don't and vicxeversa.

I have all the official stuff on 7" singles, 12" singles, LPs (120 cm), CDs (80 cm)

The unofficial stuff is all on harddisks (organized by artist and date of recording) so I have instant access.

Of course I also have some nice bootlegs as LPs and CDs, but just for fun (e. g. colored vinyl, outstanding covers, rarities)

All bootlegs are on my laptop
Sold all of my vinyl a couple of years ago apart from the Readers Digest box set

More and more I see people scaling the physical size of their collection down. To files and MP3s etc. I think I would miss the artwork too much..

the historical-record freak here has one piece of furniture for the official stuff in chronological order,
another for the bootlegs in chronological order, and a pile for the stuff i haven't gotten around to making room for.

My collection is in no order at all. Actually it is a complete mess.

The criteria should be Stones vs. Rest of the World

Stones in cronological order divided in official, studio boots and concerts.

Rest of the World has quite a few subsections

- crap cd I NEVER listen to
- downloaded music from internet
- per group until 1980
- in cronological order according to release date thereafter.

Truth is that there is a big pile of cds lps cassettes minidiscs that run from the stereo to the guitars section ...

CDs: Everything A to Z with special collections,
genres, artists, set aside in own racks. I like
large wall cd units with shelves not slots, that
hold 500 to 1000 cds each.

Vinyl; All A to Z, stored vertically on metal
storage shelves you can buy in most hardware stores.
Singles in long boxes I bought at a record shop.

Cassettes: Those old plastic storage cases, now in
the back of a shelf in my walk in closet.

Boot DVD's: In a binder by group.

Official DVD's: Commercial shelving I bought
at a junk shop.

MP3's + Torrents: Two external hard drives,
100 Gigs and 260 gigs. I backed up my Stones
boots this way too.

Posters + Photos: Mounted on the wall.

Overdone? Hey it's a way of life. No use half doing it!

If you're thinking of replacing your cds with mp3s, be aware (if you're not already) that mp3s are "lossy" -- they shrink the file by losing data. If you play the mp3 on a proper stereo rather than your computer speakers, you'll notice the difference. Good for checking out a track, but not something you'll want to listen to years hence.

All stored in a cabinet. I run them from my Creative Zen Touch, everywhere I am. Car, work, living room, bedroom etc.

I store all the official Stones albums in my white PS cabinet from IKEA.
It features lockable doors for increased security and the tall legs makes cleaning easy. LOL!!!
The combination of being a poor student and living in Sweden makes you buy all your furniture at the rather inexpensive IKEA.

This is not entirely correct. True is that mp3 is "lossy" but if you are doing the encoding process properly you will only lose data that no human ear can hear anyway. A properly encoded mp3 will sound exactly like the original file.

There are many options with mp3 encoders so it is recommended to study the manual. An mp3 with 192 kbps and joint-stereo will satisfy everyone but audiophiles whose hearing abilities seem to exceed those of bats.

Of course I'm assuming you are not trying to encode your music first at MP3 at 32 kbps, then to WAV and back to MP3 at 192 kbps since this will of course result in a reasonable loss of music quality.

Best is you try the various MP3 options and let your own ear decide.

I'm backing up my boots on MP3's at 192 kps.
Seem okay to listen too, but for the gaps
between trax on the live cuts, where I had
to comprimise and use fades. Does anybody
know of any better solutions?

My cd's are all in their orignal jewel cases and organized accordingly:

1. Stones
2. Blues
3. Jazz
4. Roots - Cajun, Zydeco, Tejano, Folk
5. Rock and Pop
6. Country and Western
7. Spiritual/Gospel

The Stones deserve their own category because they incorportated all of the above and that is precisely why I love them so much. Anything with a Stones-recorded song on it is also regarded as a Stones record - i.e. the Ready to Wear Soundtrack, and B.B. King's Duet albums. And Keith's cd's are included of course. I have none of Jaggers solo crap.
