always loved it....and getting some previously unreleased gems back in the 70's was a pleasant surprise...and that Kafka-esque cover is great!...love to have a t-shirt of that pic

Would have preferred Bill Wyman's version. This one has an emphasis on Mick's guide vocals for other artists. Side two is great--"I Don't Know Why" is one my fave Stones tunes.

I think Side 1 sucks. Apart from "Dont Lie To Me", this is Jagger with studio-musicians. And a lot of the songs is in the same spirit as "My Girl" or "Under The Boardwalk". Side 2 though, is great. "I Dont Know Why" and "Im Going Down" knocks me out.

I don't know why is my third fav. Stones song after Gimme Shelter and Jigsaw Puzzle. I used to have that riff on my answering machine, I thought that was so cool. hehe.

I actually even like Much Rather Be With They Boys, and Walking Through the Sleepy City.

Wasn't looking too good, but I was feeling real well.

It's well worth to give the tracklist of Bill Wyman's proposition (entitled THE BLACK BOX):

A01 Bright lights, big city [1963 studio]
A02 Cops and robbers [1964 live]
A03 I'd much rather be with the boys [1965 demo session]
A04 Little red rooster [1965 live]
A05 Down the road apiece [1965 live]
A06 Let's talk it over [1964 studio]
B01 If you let me [1966 studio]
B02 Godzi [1966 studio]
B03 Panama powder room [1966 studio]
B04 Gold painted nails [1967 studio]
B05 Fanny Mae [1965 radio]
B06 Down in the bottom [1964 studio]

The released version definitely sucks even if there are some (very few) acceptable tracks on it. Quite a lot of the tracks aren't tracks which deserve the label Rolling Stones. Yes there are some Stones tracks, but almost all of them sound like the usual bootleg stuff and ain't by far of the musical quality one would expect from the greatest rock'n'roll band in the world.

Chas & Tat2you, note that (I)DNW is a cover.

The songs on side 1 like We're Wasting Time, Sleepy City etc. actually do have the other Stones playing on them. I thought all along that it was Mick and maybe Keith along with studio musicians playing but in Bill's Rolling With The Stones book, he mentions Andrew got them into the studio to record several of the songs and I think he said they got paid 2 pounds each. He mentions the dates, too, but I don't have the book infront of me.
I've always liked the versions of Heart of Stone and Out of Time.

Yeah, Don't Know Why is a Stevie Wonder song. Lots of Stones songs are covers--haven't heard Stevie's version but the Stones version rocks--would be surprised if Stevie's has that lead slide.

Yeah, one of my absolute fav´s too.
Story behind is that the info on Brian´s death came by phone
just before the take that was taped was done.
The track closest to Mick Jagger´s heart - as I hear it.

I've heard the Stevie Wonder original of IDKW, I liked it, but you're right Baboon, it didn't have that magic slide.

Is this the song you were talking about that they were recording when they got the call about Brian? I hope so, I'm glad to hear that Mick and I have the same favorites.

Wasn't looking too good, but I was feeling real well.

Love it, especially side 2. Family, Don't Know Why and Memo are among my favorite Stones tracks. I always thought Family was such a cool, dark Stones song which would have been great on an offical album, although would seem sort of out of place on Beggar's Banquet or Let it Bleed. Always wished to hear these songs live but don't think it will ever happen.
