For Stones virgins?

This might be a bothersome post among the good ones up right now...but......I took a friend to a stones show and we are probaly going back to another chicago show. She wants me to make her up a CD of Stones music or give her one that the Stones created themselves. My personal fav is Tatto You. Any suggestions for a 20 year old girl? She enjoyed Out of Control and Ruby Tuesday the most at Soldier field. Thanks in advance. Hail To The Stones!! Tom

make 1 yourself. mix a few here and there. probably start with the hits or just newer stuff than tattoo you. a 20 year old won't want the obscurities at first.

Just play Get yer Yas Yas out Beggars Banquet and Exile for her. If she doesn't convert to a full fledged fan after them then dump her ass .

Don't play Exile! No matter what anyone says, that one takes getting used to. You want to ease her into Exile.... eventually.

exile is like anal sex. don't start off with it . give her the missionary position first-like let it bleed.

I would say 40 Licks except three out of the four new songs on Disc 2 suck. Make her a copy of 40 Licks, but take out Keys To Your Love, Stealing My Heart and Losing My Touch and replace them with Out of Control, She's So Cold and Harlem Shuffle. That'll give you about as good of an overview of the Stones as you could want.

When she's had time to digest that, give her a copy of A Bigger Bang (without Streets Of Love).

ok, im not far off being 20, to get the youth into the stones here is the trick, here are the tunes that all of my friends our age like by the stones:

jumping jack flash
gimmie shelter
paint it black
its only rock and roll
as tears go by
ruby tuesday
out of tears
monkey man
you can't always get what you want
shine a light
wild horses

and then as others said, tough to go wrong with let it bleed or beggars, the older stuff is the trick man, ease them into the later stuff

hehehe JJ Flash I cracked some shit that is great! I was thinking exile but I guess it would be kinda difficult. So I think a mix from Stripped, Flashpoint, and maybe 1 or 2 for Live Licks would be alright. Those live albums right there have that energy of the boys that makes them so great. Parts of exile would work, listening to Let it Loose right now just gives me chills I love this stuff. Anyhow I just want her to understand the greatness of the best band in the world. Thanks for your suggestions folks. Cheers! Tom

I made my 18 year daughter three cds of mixed Stones stuff, and her favorite was the one with 17 obscure album cuts from 1967 or before. Her age group, at least her group of friends, is just digging "vintage" stuff right now!

"Let It Bleed" or "Some Girls" or "Sticky Fingers." "Exile" and any number of others can come later.

Trust the greatness of those records. The person in question knows, or will know, "Satisfaction," "Jumpin Jack Flash" and the others. The key to really creating a connection with the band is showing off a vital piece of work just as it appeared. Those records are the reality of the Stones--not some overview.

The above albums are as perfect rock'n'roll as anyone has ever made. They define the genre. If someone doesn't respond, they aren't meant to...

brown sugar
miss you
paint it black
sweet virginia
sister morphine
love in vain
you can't always get what you want
tumbling dice
casino boogie
you gotta move
sympathy for the devil
jumping jack flash
2000 light years from home
honky tonk women
angie

and from ABB:

rough justice
streets of love
rain fall down
oh no not you again
back of my hand

Yes LET IT BLEED is missionary style but it's like, in your face, you know. Since the way to a man's heart is through his stomach I'd start with GOATS HEAD SOUP because it's got "Angie" on it, you're never wrong with that one when with a girl (but don't forget to show her the single cover). If she's eventually ready to subdue it's time for BLACK AND BLUE, and "Fool to cry".

O think the BIG FOUR (and ideas like that) are very MALE ideas. Women don't like the same Stones songs. Many of them are even into the mid-1960s ballad sound ("Heart of stone", "As tears go by", AFTERMATH, "Ruby Tuesday"), an era which most male Stones fans have somehow long forgotten.

yeah maybe aftermath(uk version) would be the ladies choice.

I would make a comp based on their current set list--the more familiar she is with songs they are going to play the more she'll enjoy the show.

LoFL - right, that Stones as Boys' Club effect again.
*scary idea* that women respond to that glorious raunch! :E
forget Angie. how about Now, Aftermath, Beggars/LIB, Tattoo You and ABB?

withssoul:

I'm right with ya. "The men don't know, but the little girls understand" and all that...chicas love a little bit of nastiness.

"Sticky Fingers" seems to work very well with the ladies. A lot of bad boy sexiness, but also a lot of beauty and romanticism. And think about how outright weird "You Gotta Move" is likely to sound to a twenty year-old...

One of the biggest traps is that everyone THINKS they know the Stones--"Start Me Up," "Satisfaction," "Ruby Tuesday," "Sympathy," etc. "Yeah, yeah the Stones. I know. Great," the people say. "Classic."

Obviously, those tracks are amazing. But the fact that--in the States, at least--classic rock radio has reduced the Stones to that stuff is why people are bored to tears of the Stones. They're just an institution.

Those "strange" edges--like "You Gotta Move" or "Moonlight Mile" or "Dead Flowers"--are the perfect antidote to the very, very false familiarity that casual listeners feel with the Stones.

I can't help thinking that "Some Girls" would sound pretty cool to a kid who probably sees The Clash as ancient legends of rock. And of course, "Let It Bleed." And covers like "It's All Over Now" and "Time Is On My Side."

Stonestom: I've been agonizing about how to, ahem, preach to the young lady in your post! A major responsibility to offer up such gifts...

Hey Stonestom:

It's funny, but for some reason I had assumed that you were a good deal older than your lady friend who's looking for an introduction to the Stones.

I'm thirty-five and I feel like I'm something of a young 'un to be so caught up with these guys. What got you hooked? Which records drew you into the Stones?

Rev.

Hi folks,
to make a person get warm with the Stones I would suggest 40 licks as a first step.
Then I would choose 4 songs out of evry studio album they made.
Think that is enough to make that person become a Rolling Stones junky.
