I admit to being guilty of calling them "our boys" and "the boys" My Aunt's are older than The Rolling Stones and we all still call them "the girls" When talking about our sons we say "the boys" and our 3 daughters are "the girls" We use it as a term of affection and describing a group of siblings. I reckon I've always thought of the Stones as a group of brothers.
I could see myself calling them "the boys" if I were 1) female or 2) roughly their age, and had been around when they were lads. Neither is the case, so "the boys" seems just too cutesy.
