He was never "a stone" in the first place.

He was a session musician that played for a vast number of bands.

Though he contributed on some of (I.M.O) their best records...

Why did he stop playing with the Stones before he died?

I heard he had some real health problems to do with his stomach which prevented him travelling much. I think he actually died from stomach cancer in the end.

Some weeks before his passing he made recordings with Bill Wyman for his album "Anyway The Wind Blows". Nicky is only in the US version released in 1999, the UK version was released in 1998 and has no Nicky. The American version has two bonus track from some of the very last studio session with Nicky Hopkins recorded at Braise Studios, Maidenhead, England between April and September 1994. The tracks with Nicky are the closing tracks "Sugar Babe" and "Gonna Find Me A New Love".

That was a few weeks before he passed away in Nashville on September 6, 1994. Nicky's last sessiones with the Stones were for the ER album. He appears in Tattoo You but with older recordings. However he recorded with Wood and Wyman later 1981 and 1992 and jammed live with Mick Taylor in 1991 and 1992.

I don't know why he didn't work with the Stonesn anymore since then. There are rumours but I don't know the real reason.

I'm finishing a website about Nicky, take a look, it has great audio samples from his solo albums and some sessions with the greatest. The website is here [www.rocksoff.org]

He always had health problems; Nicky's career was interrupted in May 1963 by a real lengthy hospital spell, for a total of eighteen months in the hospital with between other symptoms: stomach trouble, which eventually resulted in him losing his gall bladder, his left kidney and suffering a collapsed lung. This tragic situation stopped Nicky's career for more than eighteen months as he relaxed at home after the hospital long-stay as he was suffering also from exhaustion and emotional problems: he was inactive from May 1963 to early 1965.

He passed away by chronic health problems and hearth complications after an operation for a stomach illness.

This is one of his last pictures, with Peter Rodman which kindly donated it to our website

This photo taken by Nicky's wife Moira in the backyard of their house in Nasville in 1994 during his last interview, soon to appear at our Nicky's website.

I've posted this many times, but it's worth repeating here.
When I was working retail, Nicky Hopkins was the nicest musician I met (after Mac).
Funny, the musicans were the nicest and the actors were the rudest.
He always remembered my name and was always interested in what I was
doing musically. He answered all my questions about the Stones and
Olympic studios. The one I remember best was when I asked him if it was him playing
keys on the Kinks Village Green album (as it has his style all over that record).
He said, "yeah, that's all me, and that bastard Ray Davies took all the credit for it."

Thank's a lot! It's a greate site you've created there. I went through all the sound samples and there were quite many cool one's to hear. Especially the "Edvard"-track was enjoyable.

After Listening to these samples....what can i say about Chuck Leavell???
Only that he is the worst Stones pianist ever and that his way to play the piano is very very poor.

Didn't know that, he had a short period of heavy drinking, in fact there's a show with the Jerry GarcĂa Band in New Years Eve in which he sounds dead drunk when doing the down-counting for the new year, however his piano is superb that show.
