"Loving Cup" at Hyde Park '69

ok...most of you probably know that the stones played "loving cup" at Hyde Park in 1969.....why did they wait 3 years later to release it on exile?

because at the time Let It Bleed wasnt fully recorded and they wouldnt have known the final track list?

The Stones intended to release two studio albums in 1969. So they had plenty of songs

And its no big deal that they waited 3 years to release it. About half of the songs on Exile pre-date Sticky Fingers and the released versions of those older songs were an improvement anyway

Lots of Stones songs take literally years to 'evolve'. They're hardly unique in that respect

true, but how many of em do they play live 3 years before they release them officially

Little Baby was played 33 years before they released it, although thats a cover!

But seriously, with several artists its not a big deal. I've tapes of Neil Young playing "Country Home" live in 1975 and he didnt record that for another 15 years. He's done countless songs in concert that didnt see the light of day for years afterwards, or in some cases never. A lot of artists 'road test' songs some time before they record them or play unreleased songs. The Stones just havent done it that often. Quite a few songs played at Hyde Park were at the time unreleased (Midnight Rambler being another).

Worried About You was actually played live 4 1/2 years before the version on Tattoo You came out.

not many.....

Loving Cup is a Stones "anomaly" - there hasn't been a Stones song that's been played "unreleased" ever????

I have the feeling it was going to be on Let It Bleed but they left it off in the last couple of months....I mean - why would they play it at Hyde Park ??

Especially since it was a hard song to play ????

I know most (all?) posters in this thread know it, but...
Gimme Lil Drink was the original name of this wonderful song, wasnt it?

Subsequently released yes, but not when played at Altamont, which I thought was Esky's point with Loving Cup being an anomaly.

just yankin' your chain...lol

well..theyve played lots of songs before theyve been released (a few on this tour too)..usually in the same year but others like YCAGWYW (R&R Circus), Dead Flowers, Cherry oh Baby were played a year or so earlier...

Worried About You and Loving Cup were the only original songs I can think of that were premiered more than a couple of years in advance

Didnt they play You Gotta Move in '69 as well? Of course, they didnt write that one...

About playing (at the time) unreleased songs, I think all songs from Let It Bleed which were performed live on the 69 tour weren't released until the end of the tour, if I'm not wrong...

Yes - in the end (Brown Sugar) it was "released" on the next album.

But I don't think there was ever a Stones song played on Tour that wasn't "released on their next album ?? Correct??

Interesting...

Of course mate, but the difference with Loving Cup was that it didn't appear for another 2 albums later...

I reckon this is the so-called "anomaly".

YCAGWYW was played during R'nR Circus and appeared on LIB.

You Gotta Move was played live '69 and on Sticky...

Worried about you was recorderd earlier but was never played live until El Macambo...

I think Loving Cup is on it's own...

I think its interesting to hear artists play songs before they are actually released. I cite Pink Floyd as an example: They played Darkside of the moon more than a year before it was releaesed. When they first played it, it bared only a passing similarity to the finished version. They also did this with Wish you were here, playing shine on you crazy diamond in 1974, then letting it evolve for the next year. (ditto to the songs Sheep and Dogs from Animals, which started out with different lyrics, but same music at the same time).
In the stones case, look at midnight rambler on the 1969 tour. I recall hearing Mick sing different lyrics at different points in the song. It was clearly evolving, and perhaps these groups felt that after roadtesting a song(s) they could nail them in the studio. In both cases it worked.

Technically, Sure the One You Need is a Stones song. They played it on two dates of the 1975 tour but the Stones never released it officially.

Who wrote 'Spend Some Gold With Me' (known under other titles too) that they played at Altamont but never again. Was it a Muddy song?

Its a Jimmy Reed song. Correct title is "The Sun is Shining"
