Could anyone recommend a more value-priced hotel in midtown Manhattan for my wife and myself that is located relatively close to MSG?

I still think the Hotel Pennsylvania is good value because you can walk to MSG...

At least three of the Stonesvikings will stay at The Edison. A friend of mine recommended it, he said that it is a good hotel for the price.

The POennsylvania Hotel, just across the street. Cheap, small rooms. But definitely ok.
Stayed there twice. Se you at the MSG on January 18th and 20th...
