"gimme shelter"

This has got to be one of the best if not the best of lot. has a dark and cruel feel to it and realyy is a classic for stones fans. If you don't rate this then well I don't know because this is at their very best. This period is well documented but they cannot live up to these albums because the enviroment typifies their songs and of course whoever jagger is @#$%& at the time.

I rate the mod stuff but all the drugs and mystic has already been writtenabut when they were on the shit . Even now it cannot really compare to what was to what is. Thier music now is fresh and old but nothing like the feel I get from songs such as this one. The writing is great and the muic is well worth the money and everything else that goes with it but the real"blood and gut" is
gone, only shells of their formerself.

Beyond a warhorse.....its a classic in the sense it ought to be studied with Mozart and Bach.

I NEVER get tried of listening to it.

#......Go ahead....Bite the Big Apple....Don't mind the Maggots.....Uh Huh...#

Wouldn't Gimme Shelter be a great concert opener? Imagine the stage and lights all black and then hear Keith playing the opening notes?

Yeah, very cool ambience to that. But I've heard it too often...

Brilliant idea for opener! The way it builds up would be very dramatic, plus a real classic!
I don't think SMU was a real classic after all. It's been heard way too much (Windows publicity + hype surrounding the Stones at the Max film), and my feeling is even the average fan (the "warhorse fan") is growing tired of it somehow. Whereas GS perhaps is still a bit obscure and undergound for the public at large.
SFM as the opener for the arena show, last time around, was also like that. When it got taped by the local media for the news, TV people were going a bit "head scratching": what's that obscure, indian-sounding thing supposed to be, a RnR hit?? And THAT's in the RnR spirit! The main thing is it rocked and didn't sound like fake pleasure from the band.

This song impresses even the non-fan. Like "Paint It Black" in that way. It's often alluded to in news articles, etc. I was really surprised they didn't play it for the New Orleans benefit. I guess it was too literal.

yeah, it all comes together on this song true, but because they have soo many good ones its also a matter of mood.

MCDDTLC, do you know of anywhere on the net that this Wembley '73 version of Gimme Shelter can be downloaded? (whole show would be great)

definately one of the top 5 best Stones songs.

A song which you never seem to get sick of.

The Live 1972-73 versions are great, but I still reckon the haunting 1969 studio and the live 1969 version (especially Altamont) are even better!

I been a Stones fan for 40 years & the opening of Gimme Shelter still gives me the chills. My favorite of all time.

It's so very lonely, you're 2,000 Light Years from home

Thanks Withsssoul... Think I have some 22-23-24 by now...
But this was the best, no doubt. Among live recordings.
Like in my other all-time Stones fav, Shine A Light, Taylor
is balancing on the edge, but also on the boundary of
playing too much, too long, too extended & too ego tripped...
But in these two songs his style works & even if it isnt weaving he does with
Keith, they can interact in a rock ´n´rollish way.

Very organic, this Wembley version. Thunderstorm´s a-rolling;
we can sense we´re not so far from the Blietzen attacks in Dartford, Kent;
from where (at least I´m sure) this song once was evolved.

...Studio version, though, is hard to top.
But this Wembley version is a smasher too.
I put them at the same level at forehand
(cause I know this version will grow on me).

This one STILL sends chills down my spine -- it is one of the most brilliant live moments EVER for the Stones -- its legend has been enhanced by the fact it is only available on countless boots (and often incorrectly associated with the also-legendary Brussels '73 show).

As a matter of fact, I fully believe that Brussels has garnered its legendary status because several of the Wembley songs ("Gimme Shelter", "Happy" and "Street Fighting Man" are often included in "Brussels" boots).

>> on the boundary of playing too much <<

yeah, for me too.
to me the 69 demo version with Keith doin the vocals is the shiningest/darkest/chillingest -
and at the same time it's the only version i can't stop dancing to.
scenic grandeur at every turn, and those perilous rhythms - way beyond beautiful.

The word "Epic" does not seem large enough to describe this classic.
No song ever written has captured so many emotions both melodicly and lyrically. Gimme Shelter defined the end of the sixties like no other song could.
It will live on forever. For many of us it has become the soundtrack to our lives.

>> on the boundary of playing too much <<

The '73 European Tour was the beginning of the end for Mick T. The hints of boredom are there -- hell, he could've stood backstage and added as much to the onstage interaction, which at that time was virtually nil as far as HE was concerned. It can be argued that Taylor was no more of a Stone than Darryl Jones now is. He served a 5-year tenure as a "special guest".

Then, as now, the show revolved around three guys -- Mick, Keith and Charlie. Mick Taylor already realized that he was simply icing on the cake.
