Genesis has been eligible for 15 years. I think this is the first time they've been nominated.

Abba
LL Cool J
Red Hot Chilli Peppers
Kiss
Darlene Love*
Jimmy Cliff
Donna Summer
Laura Nyro*
Chantels
Stooges*
Genesis
Hollies*

I've marked my five.

Finally Laura Nyro got on a ballot...but once again, the SMALL FACES are shut out.

And there are at least a dozen more artists more worthy than some on this list.

It's my annual rant.

Stooges...stop there.

It is time that the Stooges get in. On the flipside, Abba deserves a nod, as they've produced many memorable singles and have a sound that is all their own.

I never thought of Abba as rock n' roll...maybe I'm alone in this. None of the non-rock folks should have gotten in to begin with. Then again, the Abba folks may think Miles is rock n' roll too...or Madonna for that matter. The RnR HOF is a joke.

Despite the name the RnRHoF has NEVER been designed to be solely concerned with rock n roll. Its been the same since day one, when James Brown was one of the original inductees.

Every year people take this way too literally.

I don't mind the genre overlap, I just think that they are missing a few of the obvious choices:

Faces (Small and regular size)

Flying Burrito Bros.

Little Feat

Delaney & Bonnie and Friends

Guess Who

Todd Rundgren

War

and many more...

I do hate the not-rock choices when they mean excluding people more worthy.

And I'm getting sick of the double-dippers. The writer in the LA Times today lamented that they didn't have Sting--as a solo artist--on the list! Like that wank-er needs to be in twice when Steve Marriot and Ronnie Lane still haven't been inducted...

Re: OT: This Year's Rock Hall Nominees

Sting hasnt been a solo artist for 25 years (his first album came out in 1985) so he wouldnt be eligible.

For the same reason, John Lennon wasnt inducted until 1994, although the Beatles were inducted in 1988. McCartney didnt even get in in his own right until 1999, and Harrison (posthumously) was inducted in 2004.

It doesn't even matter when...it's WHY they would waste a slot on Sting's solo career when a genius/madman like Harry Nilsson is left out?

I don't even think a Sting nomination is worth contemplating, so I don't know why the LA Times guy would make it seem like an upset.

Yeah right. So it isn't really the "Rock & Roll Hall of Fame"....Instead it's the cheesy commercial artsist of the year HOF......rundgren .... rush .. heart... ronstadt ... foreigner.....These are legit bands that deserve recogntion. Not these half assed acts getting in recent years.

"It's just some friends of mine and they're busting down the door"

Well, they are both. Thats not necessarily a bad thing. If you doubt their musical credibility, check out:
Detroit Rock City
Love Gun
Cold Gin

or many, many others. Its easy to take a pop at Kiss. I happen to like them.

They should NOT however be inducted ahead of Alice Cooper. Why the hell is The Coop not in there?

I nominate Gazza.

Does anyone know if Scott Walker has ever been nominated? (Though I'm well aware being the person he is he'd scoff at such awards).

Re: OT: This Year's Rock Hall Nominees

I agree with the HOF that it is not only about musical choices, but about pop/rock phenomena. So I can see Kiss in there, as well as I recognize Madonna's place. To ignore Madonna, love her or hate her is just not real. Forget about sales; she has been a huge influence on popmusic in the last 25 years.
LL Cool J is ridiculous IMO. They feel like the must at all times recognize rap as a valid force etc. But I think they true contributors who come from hip hop and who have contributed to the advancement of popular music can be counted on a few fingers and are probably already in the HOF.
ABBA - yes, undeniable.
Chili Peppers - hmm, yes The White Boy Funk genre is huge, jumpstarted all kinds of stuff, and the RHCP are way way more than just that. IMO they are one of the most creative bands around.
Darlene Love - no way; she somehow has been in the right place all along but aside from that damn " oh oh oh" sound she makes in EVERY song is lame.
Jimmy Cliff - not sure; is his contribution to reggae that strong and lasting? he hasn't done that much although what he has done is strong.
Donna Summer - all the way
Laura Nyro - marry me Bill. maybe not.
Chantels - yes
Stooges - yes; for the impact and influence which has been very very deep.
Genesis - yes and yes all the way. Should be in there for the Gabriel years. IMO the Collins years not only don't count, they almost act as detractors.
Hollies - why? no...

The Rock Hall hates anything that smacks of prog rock. It took Pink Floyd four years to get in. Genesis, like I said, has been eligible for 15 years. Jethro Tull, Yes, ELP, and King Crimson never even get nominated.

I Agree Tatters. But why is that? The Pretenders and B 52's make it in before ELP and King Crimson? i don't get it.

Much of the voting is done by rock journalists who think that an artist "matters" only if they are "influential" and spearhead some kind of shift in the course of rock history. That's why the Sex Pistols, with one album to their credit, are in, and a group like Jethro Tull, who are fantastic musicians who made some very great and very successful records, are not in. To the journalists, a group like Jethro Tull doesn't "matter". I guess they don't "matter" because they didn't inspire legions of fans to go out and buy flutes and start their own bands. In other words, they're not considered "influential" enough.
