Dutch reality TV goes all the way

The country that unleashed the reality TV show Big Brother on an unsuspecting world has taken reality television a step further: a late-night Dutch talk show whose presenters will take drugs and engage in sex acts on air, then discuss their experiences afterwards.

The live Spuiten & Slikken show - which can be translated either as Inject & Swallow or Ejaculate & Swallow - starts on October 10 on the Dutch youth channel BNN, which last upset viewers with a program entitled This is How You Screw.

"We're not setting out to shock, but to inform," said a show producer, Sjoerd van den Broek. "The idea is to treat these subjects like a piece of theatre - to review them, if you like. There's been endless chat about these matters, but never an adult critique."

The main presenter, Filemon Wesselink, 26, is billed to go on a pub crawl, take heroin in the form of a pill, and try LSD at home on the sofa under the watchful eye of his mother. He will also retire into a locked room and try to establish whether oral sex is better when performed by a man or a woman.

Meanwhile his co-presenter, Ties van Westing, will interview both Wesselink and guests about their sexual and/or narcotic practices. "We just want to explain really clearly what all this stuff actually does to you," Mr Van den Broek said.

News of the show has caused a fuss even in the liberal Netherlands. "This is dangerous and sets a bad example," a spokesman for the governing Christian Democrat party told the Associated Press. A Justice Ministry spokesman said parts of the show were "probably illegal", but it was not yet clear whether anyone could be prosecuted.

This has already been done on Dutch radio (Giel Beelen) a few years ago so the only 'new' thing is there's a camera around...

Sad Sad Sad... Dutch television is all about reality crap and pushing boundaries these days. In the new series of Big Brother there is even a pregnant woman inside the house, who will give birth in several weeks. Not live though.

And BNN even belongs to the public network. Just imagine how the commercial channels are. And then imagine further that our state secretary of culture Van Der Laan wants to further withdraw funds of the public broadcasting companies and let them compete with the commercial bc's. Dutch televsion has gone downhill rapidly the last ten years or so, but I even don't dare imagine what it will be like in another ten years.

I wouldn't call a spokesman for the Christian Democrats the right representative of Dutch liberalism! Christian Democrats are as narrow minded as hell here!

I promise you, it's too much fuss. There'll be nothing worth remembering and it'll be shorlived.

I'm from Holland. I think it's a funny idea. But with all these American influences we'll probably get everything censored. What's the fun about it then? It is now actually cool to beep away words in video clips...

It's not gonna be that great. A couple of weeks ago everybody we had "De Sperma Show", translated it means "The Sperm Show". They renamed it "Ik wil een kind van jou, en verder niets", which means "I want your baby, and nothing else". But it's all realy a publicity stunts. If you're thinking we're gonna see any boobs... forget it.

The presenters are going to take heroine. The sex thing is fine with me, but the drugs thing I'm not to sure about. You shouldn't mess around with stuff like smack... it's can kill you if your name isn't Keith Richards, you know what I mean.
