What Voodoo Lounge should have been
Posted by: nmaillot ()

For me, VL is a pretty good album but not a masterpiece.
When I listen VL outtakes (voodoo stew), I feel that this album could have been a real classic, even better than Some Girls.
By removing the fillers, here is my track list (of course with the raw mix):

1 Love is strong
2 Sparks will fly
3 You got it made
4 Brand new car
5 So youg
6 Baby break it down
7 You got me rocking
8 I go wild
9 Jump on top of me
10 Make it now
11 Mean disposition
12 Thru and Thru

What do you think of that list ?
Isn't it better than the album ?
What would you change ?

I prefer the released VL to your version to be perfectly honest.

But I do agree I could have been better. The album simply runs too long. That's the biggest flaw. Not that 62 minutes is too long for an album, but it is for this one. That's because of the filler material.

Maybe something like this:

1. Love is Strong
2. Jump On Top of Me
3. The Worst
4. Sparks Will Fly
5. The Storm
6. Out of Tears
7. I go Wild
8. Blinded by Rainbows
9. Thru and Thru
10. Mean disposition

I do not agree with some comments that the album is fake. I still like it the way it was released.

By the way... So Young isn't really from the Voodoo Lounge Sessions. It's from 78 sessions.

About So young, has it been re-worked by the stones during the VL sessions ?

Yes indeed.
But I never see it as a VL outtake.

i wouldn't change a thing! i know that sounds really childlike and positive, but I really wouldn't. I love each of those songs. I'd even add the Strom for good measure, at least like a bonus track or hidden song. Love is Strong, Out of Tears, I Go Wild, Baby Break It Down, all classics in my book.

Voodoo Lounge circa Early 70's Mix
48:15

Side 1

Love Is Strong
Sparks Will Fly
he Storm
The Worst
Jump On Top Of Me
I Go Wild

Side 2

You Got Me Rockin
New Faces
Out Of Tears
Sweethearts Together
So Young
Blinded By Rainbows
Cocaine Blues

I'm not too sure about side 2, though. A bit slow. I'm sure many would exclude Sweethearts but it is a personal fave of mine..and its my mix!

Just burned it, listening now!

i found the rockers on vl to be disappointing. "sparks will fly" is just dumb, a lazy knockoff, and "i go wild" was ruined by studio gimmickry. kill those two and "sweethearts together" and you've got a better-than-average album.

well you got to have filler on some albums. but i always say voodoo lounge is better than bridges to babylon.

I just can't agree that VL could or would ever be nearly as good or let alone better than SG. Hello? There isn't a single song that comes close to Beast of Burden, Respectable, Shattered let alone Miss you. In 2005 Some Girls is still in the top 100 all time rock albums - I don't think I have ever seen VL in any of the reviews.

OOT is the album's stand-out track. Organic.

Another two or three natural products. The rest is synthetic.

Could have been a real classic without:

Brand new car
Sparks will fly
Suck on the...
Mean Disposition
blinded by rainbows

replaced by:

Honest Man
You got it made
Zip mouth Angel
The Storm
So young

I think I'm one of the very few fans that actually likes New Faces. I think it's a very intresting song. The lyrics are both sincere and funny.. some nice acoustics going on. A mellow track basicly which never got any attention.
I'm not particular fond of Blinded by Love, which a lot of fans compare New Faces to. Does anyone agree this song deserves a bit more credit?

i dig New Faces, Rutger - it's surprising and odd, and yeah there sure is some pretty pretty guitar on it.
VL grooves me just fine the way it is. they sure enough could've made another beautiful album of the B sides and outtakes, but hey - the Stones have their reasons of which reason knows nothing.

Btw, who likes Moon is Up ?
I would like to know how they got the idea to play that song live in 99 smiling smiley

I am suprised that so many people do not enjoy sparks will fly.
The bridge in that song (after "sharks will cry...") is maybe one of the best Keith moment of the last decade. This chord progression has something very special, especially when you know it is played in Open G.
It is just too sad that this song does not really work live.

I like Moon Is Up, thought it sounded cool live also. I think VL is fine the way it is, would not change a thing.

A friend of mine who recently just got into the Stones and bought all their albums ranks VL as one of his favorites.

You are on to something, sssoul! There is just about a complete 2nd album of quality stuff with b-sides and Brew/Stew outtakes.

Keeping with the '70's format of 10-12 songs and about 45 minutes, the following would be another great Stones album:

Side 1

1. Honest Man
2. You Got It Made
3. The Storm
4. Ivy League (inst)
5. Jump On Top Of Me

Side 2:

1. So Young
2. Im Gonna Drive
3. Zip Mouth Angel
4. It's Alright (inst)
5. Cocaine Blues

Well, Its a start! Maybe a bit light. Any suggestions?

Ross

Moon Is Up is one of the few naturals. Unaffected, spontaneous feel and interesting/different.
