My kid has RockBand. It's fun, but teaches you nothing about playing guitar. Drums is a little more realistic. Singing is kind of Kareoke.

But...my 8 year old is learning a whole lot of classic rock songs! That's a plus considering what's on the radio today...

He has more 50's, 60's, 70's music on his mp3 player than many adults.

Ideal for wannabe Keith Richards who, by his own admission 'Got the moves off first then learned to actually play the guitar'. grinning smiley

never played the game but feel that the guitar hero and rockband games have helped save rock music in a major way. alot of kids are getting into classic rock because of them

I know that bv doesn't like it and I never use them myself as I'm with him and you on this. I also noticed that he's edited the original post to remove the smiley.
So, bv, why are we given the option if you don't want us to use it?
New users won't know of this ruling.

yeah its a good thing. Used to think it was stupid but games like this and rockband have introduced kids to a whole other world of music. and has inspired a lot to actually learn how to play a real guitar. I dont know anyone who actually thinks they know how to play guitar because they can play these games. Its just fun. Not my cup of tea but i can appreciate how its fun for lots of folks. i play the real thing but i am not a snob about it. I love anything to do with guitar and guitar hero and rockband has actually brought back the instrument at a time when it was getting lost in the mix. Literally. I bet some kids didnt even know what the hell sound a guitar made in songs. This game has sort of saved rock and roll in a way. Some people are so damned pretentious and self righteous. Chill dudes. Its fun for the kids and adults alike.

I was in Best Buy with my 7 1/2 year old son and after dragging him away from some Lord of the Rings thing, I asked him to show me -- I guess it's Rock Band -- and so it was like bizarro Beatles with the screaming chicks and my son was nowhere close to being able to follow the bouncing whatever things to play the drums. But, he got to know the song Day Tripper and it opened up a conversation about the screaming girls, which I, of course, had to steer back to a better conversation about the screaming girls at Stones concerts. Anyway....all these games are way beyond me...I certainly couldn't figure out how to get the Wii thing to start!

Before guitar hero or rockband we had tennis raquets. Nothing wrong with striking a pose with a tennis racquet.

I take your point, but tennis racquets were also somewhat useful for playing tennis.

I used a racquet to get the moves off and then progressed to the real thing. Screw the tennis let's rock. The only reason that I hate Guitar Hero is that I can't do it. In fact I'm not good at computer games full stop.

Guitar Hero, Rockband and the like are just vehicles to sell units. The side effects are turning youngsters on to a bunch of great music and selling concert tickets.

I keep on trying to play 'Keith'. I try to be realistic. I put a bottle of Jack Daniels on my counter, start taking a few swigs off it. The next thing you know, I wake up on the living room floor. I guess I cannot pretend to be Keith!eye popping smiley

I've played GH Aerosmith and thought it was great fun.

(Harsh critics please note: Yes I also play guitar and it's clearly just a bit of fun, more like a modern version of Simon Says with great sound and graphics, a rhythm game.)

It's a great medium for exposing kids to fantastic music and get them to participate (well, as much as you can expect, sitting in your lounge on their backsides). Maybe it will encourage the next generation of Keiths and Steves to take up the real geetar. I can't see it doing any harm. And if any of these kids mistake GH for playing a real guitar or as a substitute for creating thweir own original music, well, they're probably not geared up for that avenue of life.
