They are my third favorite behind The Stones and The Who. I saw Ray Davies in New York last December. He put on a good show. Are The Kinks ever going to reunite?

"Lyin' awake in a cold, cold sweat. Am I overdrawn, am I going in debt?
It gets worse, the older that you get. No escape from the state of confusion I'm in.

Is the thread about who comes after the Stones for us, or about opinion on the Kinks?

God save the Kinks!
Always loved them and have seen them in concert over 10 times.
Muswell Hillbillies is their Exile, and incredible album.
Aurthur- incredible concept album, better than Tommy
Lola vs. the Powermen and the Money Go-Round...finally their breakthrough in the US. And it is stunning.
Everybodies in Showbiz. Worth it just for Celluloid Heroes.
To the Bone and amazing later day live release...the boys playing in Konk studio to a selected audience of fan club members...oh to have been at that show!

Ever notice that there has never been any collaboration between Ray Davies and the Stones? I don't think I have even ever saw a picture of Ray with Mick or Keith. Weird... Ray Davies is the British Brian Wilson. Yet, the Stones, at one time or another, particularly Mick and Keith, have worked with everybody else in England. Why not Ray Davies?

I think Ray Davis and co were in their own little scene, which I think was probably a little removed from where the Stones were at around the same period.

Once they were banned from the U.S., they embarked on all things English and in one way or another, just didn’t fit in with Mick and Keith.

How can you collaborate with Ray? He is so uniquely original.

There was a time when Pete Townshend and Ray were planning on collaborating, but schedules didn't permit it, but Pete often sings praises of Ray's talent as a writer.

Yea I believe Pete calls Ray Davies the "poet laureate" of rock and roll. The Kinks have to be right behind the Stones for me as well! Saw Ray Davies at the Beacon in April '08 and he brought the house down. From Face to Face to Muswell Hillbillies has gotta be one of the greatest runs of albums in rock and roll. A brilliant lyricist too. Shangri-La might be one of my favorite songs of all time actually.

lately i've been enjoying the kinks music alot, but they're not my favorite band.but i consider them above overrated brittish bands like the who and led zeppelin. now before i get accused of trashing those two bands i want to state that i like some of their music but i think the who and zeppelin have gotten way too much radio play on rock stations over the yrs.

The Kinks are great! I think they are the quintessential British Band, more so than even the Who. Its interesting to me that the Kinks "Golden Era" occurred at the same time as the Stones and the Who:
1968-Village Green Preservation
1969-Arthur
1970-Lola
1971-Muswell Hillbillies
1972-Celluloid Heroes

I was never a big fan of the Preservation stuff, there are a few good songs on there but mostly its overly pretentious. I like Soap Opera even if it is a strange concept. Everybody's A Star; Have Another Drink; A Face in the Crowd and Can't Stop the Music are great songs. I admit that Schoolboys in Disgrace is one of my favorite Kinks Albums and albums in general. Its kind of like a cousin to Quadrophenia. No More Looking Back is a great song and one of my favorite Kinks songs. After that in the bands "revival" there were some hit and misses, but I think it was a solid effort until 1984's Word of Mouth.
Overall a greatly underrated band that doesn't get enough recognition. They were as important as the Stones, Who and Beatles to the development of modern music and yet outside of Lola, Come Dancing, You Really Got Me, All Day and all of the Night and a few 60's songs they get virtually no airplay.
Oh yes, Waterloo Sunset is THE quintessential British single.

How can one not love the Kinks.. They have had several peak eras..
Like 64-65, 70, 81..
But for me Ray's voice makes it dull after a while, its just too limited.

Arguably, the Kinks were not only greatest singles act ever, but in Ray Davies, they also had possibly, the UK's greatest ever songwriter!

Fate of course, was to deal them a terrible and unjust blow. However, even if they hadn't been denied the opportunity to tour the US during the late sixties, I have always had the impression that any transition into a typical late-sixties live act (i.e. Stones 69) would not have been successful. Their songs required far too much in terms of subtle production.

As far as their albums are concerned, my own personal favourite is the criminally overlooked Word Of Mouth from 1985.
