OT: Roger Daltrey Tour

Just heard he's kicking off a tour in Vancouver in October at the Commodore Ballroom which is an awesome venue, capacity about 1000. Just saw Chickenfoot there recently. Hopefully I can get tickets for this!

Yeah, I've not found too many dates on Ticketmaster yet though. Is there a complete tour schedule somewhere??

I just looked on Pollstar.com and it lists a number of shows, with Vancouver being the only non US show so far.

No it wasn't. I saw The Who in LA the same month. Plus I've heard boots from that tour and the last. His voice is shot. He'll be lucky to fill 1000 seats. Nobody should waste their money on this.

It was pretty much the whole tour. I saw the opener and his voice was toast by the end. I can't fathom a solo tour.

Not to mention that the Rog has a limited number of solo hits that would sit alongside Who tunes we all heard a year ago.

From the Who's official site:

Roger Daltrey has one of rock’s most legendary voices, but he doesn’t take it for granted. That’s why the set of solo dates he’ll be playing – beginning Oct. 10 in Vancouver – has been dubbed the Use It or Lose It Tour.

As lead singer for The Who, he’s lent his Olympian pipes to a staggering array of enduring rock ‘n’ roll anthems. And with plans for the band’s next tour still up in the air, Daltrey decided a solo jaunt – his first since 1985 – would be just the thing “to keep my voice in trim, so I’ll be ready,” he explains. “Those songs demand a lot of voice!”

Of course, the iconic singer’s vocal regimen is just part of the equation. “I thought it’d be nice to play smaller, more intimate venues,” he says. “I look forward to getting back to that. I want to give people a good night out. The economic situation being what it is these days, I think that’s what they want: to go out and feel they’ve had a good jolly-up.”

Those venues (which, though hardly small, are certainly intimate compared to the arenas The Who has been rocking for the last several decades) include Nashville’s famed Ryman Auditorium, Denver’s Paramount Theatre, L.A’s Orpheum, Baltimore’s Lyric, and several prominent casinos, House of Blues locations and Hard Rock Cafes.

Daltrey will be joined onstage by a longtime collaborator, guitarist/backup singer Simon Townshend (“His harmonies work beautifully with my voice,” Daltrey notes), and a stellar crew of American players, including guitarist/musical director Frank Simes, keyboardist Loren Gold, bassist Jon Button and drummer Scott Devours.

Promising a healthy serving of Who songs (“but they’ll be my versions of them”), solo material – including some songs he’s never played live – and covers that pay tribute to his influences and admired contemporaries, Daltrey relishes the chance to showcase dimensions of his vocal ability that even longtime fans haven’t yet experienced. “I think I have one of those unique, recognizable rock voices,” he ventures with typical understatement. “Even in a Who show there’s enormous range, but this show will give me an even greater opportunity to explore.”

Although he prefers to keep his set lists a surprise, it’s no secret that Daltrey has over the years performed songs by the likes of Paul McCartney, Bruce Springsteen and Queen, among others, alongside favorites from his Who and solo catalogs.

The singer’s substantial solo discography includes the acclaimed discs Daltrey, Ride a Rock Horse, One of the Boys and Under a Raging Moon, among numerous others, and such hit singles as “I’m Free,” “Giving It All Away,” “Without Your Love,” “Free Me” and “After the Fire.” His solo work has been compiled into two anthologies, Martyrs and Madmen (1997) and Moonlighting (2005).

Daltrey’s film career began, appropriately enough, with the title role in Ken Russell’s kaleidoscopic 1975 adaptation of The Who’s rock opera “Tommy.” He has since appeared in some 30 films, portraying composer Franz Liszt (as well as writing lyrics and performing several songs) in Russell’s wild classical-music fantasia “Lisztomania,” the lead in the gritty crime drama “McVicar” (for which he also furnished the hit soundtrack), and roles in “The Legacy,” “Vampirella,” “Johnny Was” and many more. His television work includes appearances on “CSI,” “That ’70s Show” and “Rude Awakening.”

Time declared Daltrey a European Hero in 2003 for his work with Teenage Cancer Trust, among other charities; he was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2004. Along with Pete Townshend, the singer was a recipient at the 2008 Kennedy Center Honors.

In addition to his charity work, Daltrey has devoted considerable time and energy to the cause of performers’ rights. In recent years he’s become one of the rock world’s most outspoken advocates on the subject, appealing to the British government to extend to musicians who play on recordings the same copyright protections now given to writers.

“We had a partial victory recently,” he reports. “The government agreed to extend the copyright period from 50 to 70 years. Intellectual property is one of the biggest battles the free world is going to face in the near future, and it’s important to get these things set in international law so it’s a fair playing field for everyone.”

In the meantime, though, Roger Daltrey is ready to use his voice to do the thing he was born to do – bring rock fans to their feet.

thewho.com will have exclusive Pre-sale tickets, VIP packages, and all other tour information posted soon. The pre-sale is set for next Wednesday, 5 Aug. to Friday 7th Aug.

Stay tuned for more information.

I saw the same show and his voice was terrible. Pete made mention of Roger being under the weather toward the end of the show.

If I'm not mistaken they were supposed to play Tampa, FL the following night and that show was cancelled due to Roger being under the weather.

While I guess he was sick in DC and Tampa his voice at least to my ears has fallen off considerable the last few years from shows I have attended and shows that I have heard.

At the end of the day his voice is croaked. Why anyone thought thier latest album was ok baffles me.

I think Roger & the Who should call it a day!

Daltrey's voice has been weakening since the Quadrophenia shows of the mid-90s. It is more apparent in his singing than some others of similar age I think because of how strong his voice was. Mick gets by talking or shouting thru a song. The Who's music requires Daltrey to sing with more power, more range.

I have always loved the Who and the Stones. The Who, to me, have generally been the much better LIVE band. They could still sound much like the original Who with Zak on drums. Pino even did a good job filling in for Entwistle, which was a surprise. But without Roger being able to sing, it's sad to hear them. Time to hang it up and not sully the reputation of the Who, live.

The fact that he's calling it the "Use It Or Lose It Tour" indicates that even Roger is ready to admit that there's a serious problem with his voice. I thought he sounded okay for MOST of the Who show I saw last year, but by the last two songs he had no voice. I mean he had NO voice at all. Listening to him struggle through those last two songs was painful and embarrassing, and it was difficult to imagine under exactly what circumstances I would ever pay to see him again.

I thought he sounded great on the 1989 tour, but in 1994 he did a show at Carnegie Hall to celebrate his 50th birthday or something, and his voice was shot by the second song. All of a sudden, it was gone, and it's never really ever come back.

"Why anyone thought thier latest album was ok baffles me"

Well the writing for one. Their was nothing as immature as 'Sweet Neocon" or 'I was a rooster'!

Townshend played amazingly throughout.

Tea and Theatre is one of their greatest tracks.....

Considering whats left of the band it blew ABB of the circuit....

IMHO obviously...

I can't agree. I think of it as a really bad Townshend solo album, his worst ever, with Roger participating as a sort of featured special guest vocalist, who even under studio-perfect conditions, sounds pretty rough.

Great response Albett! Their last one was fantastic and really showed that Pete and Roger together can still do some amazing things. Endless Wire has some of Pete's best writing and playing in years. A very special disc full of wonder and adventure. Better than It's Hard and Face Dances!
Roger's voice is struggling and I do admitt that the last tour was a rough one for him. I don't think I heard very many live tracks where he sounded good. Perhaps he was struggling with something in his chords and had some work done and now is touring? I am curious as to how he will sound. If he can pull it off it would be cool. Especially if he did a lot of the McVicer soundtrack. That is a great disc!
Sorry Tatters I just can't agree with you. I really think Endless Wire was an amazing effort and really showed Townshend's incredible prowress on the fretts. He does some amazing work on it. And there are some very interesting hooks and themes throughout the disc. I find it a much more earthy writing that is far more personal than most the newer music from the 60's bands that are still writing.

He shouldn't be doing 1 show period. Pete should do a solo tour. Even a solo acoustic tour would be more interesting than a Daltry solo tour.eye rolling smiley

That is a tricky one, because Roger comes off as such a genuinely nice, fine guy; but I could not even imagine wanting to see him solo.
The one show I saw them at lately his voice was strained by the end but not blown. What completely amazed me about the late Who is Pete's acoustic guitar playing; great. And Zak's name should start being mentioned with some of the top rock drummers out there. He is getting a little lost inside the Who.

The best time I saw Roger was on the 1994 "Roger Daltrey sings the music of Pete Townshend and The Who with special guest John Entwistle" It was two sets and backed by a local orchestra. They did a Tommy and Quadrophenia suite, some Who songs that were overlooked. He was backed by most of the Who backing band from 1989 and who perform with Pete. It was a limited tour and the show I saw was just amazing.

yes his voice is not what it used to be, kind of hoarse on a number of songs, but fine and good on others. It did bother me when i saw san diego and london in 07, but it wasnt bad enough to ruin the show and really, I just cant imagine the Who with anyone but Roger.

and i thought those shows were better than any on the ABB tour except perhaps the Beacon and the O2, which happened to be indoor shows which is pretty much the only thing the Who plays today.

seeing him solo doesnt seem all that attractive, but it could be intriguing and he could surprise folks, let's wait and see, give him a chance before we dismiss and condemn too much.

Exactly. Could the Glimmers even contemplate writing anything like Black Widows Eyes??

No, thought not.

It was a mature, thought out album with some great theme's.

A superb way to (probably) bow out.....

pete and roger alreadu have all but confirmed there will be 1 more who album and i think pete is working on it now which is why roger is doing a mini solo tour.

i didn't buy endless wire until last year but i like about 3/4th's of it and think it has about 3-4 bad tracks. that being said i still haven't purchaed "its hard" or "faces dance"

I would be interested in seeing him live. I loved my Who show in Boston and I fully understood why everyone here wants just the four band members (of the Stones) and nothing else now. But I don't think the Stones could pull it off anymore. I was completely blown away by the amount of energy that Pete Townshend had the whole show. And maybe I'm biased because I'd never seen them live before, but I loved that show!!

Considering it was Townshend's first batch of new material in THIRTEEN years, I thought he'd be able to come up with some hooks and themes I'd actually want to listen to. Not recording with the current Who lineup (Zak only plays on ONE track) was a huge mistake, as proved by the fact that this material DOES sound better (well, a LITTLE better) when the current Who lineup plays it live.
