Oakland'69 1st - best version?
Posted by: dcba ()

I have the "old" 94 Scorpio CD (copied from the OBR release) and I'd like to upgarde, if possible.
It seems "Pot Boiler" on VGP is the way to go (I'd like to stay away from tweaking labels like Tarantura).
Another question : how can I tell between the regular and the remastered "Pot Boiler"?
Thx!

Now that J.R. is no longer around, we have to do this by ourselves; this is what's around:

Oakland Coliseum, Oakland, California, November 9, 1969 (1st show)
¡Pot Boiler 1969 (1CD) VGP-265 remastered
¡Pot Boiler 1969 (1CD) VGP-265 1st-issue
¡Live'r than They'll Ever be (1CD) Outsider Bird Records OBR 305-CD-020
¡Secret Garden (1CD) Oil Well RSC CD 074
¡Bring it Back Aliver (1CD) Gold Standard 94 15 05
¡Out of Joint (2CD/disc 1) Black 'n Blue RSBB-2004/005
¡Live'r than You'll Ever be (2CD/disc 1) Tarantura TCDRS-1-1,2
¡Live'r than They'll Ever be (2CD/disc 1) SODD 013
+ a cd-r from cassette:
11-9-69 Oakland 1st show. Amplifiers blown at concert. This is the master source for the complete show in best possible quality.
(low Generation, master > 1st gen > 1CDR) [from atwiki!]

I have the following:

Can You Hear That cd-r
Pot Boiler VGP/cd-r so I don't know if it's the first or the re-issue
Liver Than You'll Ever Be SODD 013 cd-r
Liver Than You'll Ever Be Tarantura cd-r from Urban Steel [www.iorr.org]

if you want me to upload samples, just say so!
Since this forum works again, you may forget about my e-mail, of course

I just got PBoiler off a torrent site. It sounds a bit dull (= needs a slight treble boost) but the tape seems to be quite low-gen.
I had forgotten how UNremarkable and UNexciting this gig is : what a contrast with the brillant L.A. 2nd from a few hours before winking smiley
The most interesting thing about this show is the mixed-up setlist.
Guess I'll stick to this VGP and won't seek an upgrade.

The best sounding and most complete version is the 1st gen. Pot Boiler is sourced from that so it should be the best out of the silver disc releases.

dcba, you're putting your life at risk here, nothing about the 69 tour is unremarkable and unexciting!cool smiley

The cause of the mixed up setlist is a amplifier, that's blown up!

"you're putting your life at risk here, nothing about the 69 tour is unremarkable and unexciting!"
You're right, I face a 6-month hard labour penalty... listening to Bill Wyman's "Green Ice" record repeatidly.
No wonder why the TMOQ guys chose the 2nd show for "Liver..." then released the San Diego tape (around 1972?)

I'm not really shure.
But in my memory "We never got it on till Detroit" was the next? But perhaps I mix it up and only bought it first.("Stoned MSG" I remember very early too).

Boy, - those were times! Every bootleg was an adventure!
No Stonesboards,no net,etc. at all.

You never knew what you had in your hands! Even the foreign tours and more so the setlists were mostly unknown! Some of those records were so bad, - unbelievable!
And sometimes you found a nugget . . !

I really like the Tarantura version.

i actually prefer the first show to the second one!
Even with the amps blowing out, the show has a raw edge to it...which the second show lacks.
Both shows are not the band's most inspiring efforts though....

I´ve always found it interesting how after the amp failure during JJF, Mick cleverly makes it look like playing the acousting songs was totally spontaneous and improvised ("Hope you don´t mind us playing that" ) even though they were a regular part of the setlist and performed every night.

I also prefer the first Oakland show over the second one.
In fact, I was never really a fan of the classic Liver Than You´ll Ever Be performace: The show drags, they play with borrowed equipment and sound kinda wimpy and tentative. I don´t know what the Stones did during the tour break after Chicago (rehearsals?) but the playing was A LOT better during the second leg of the tour (Detroit through Altamont).

yeah the Live'r show does lack atmosphere, perhaps it was the stand-in amps which makes the recording seem "quieter"...

did they visit the Playboy Mansion in 1969 ? or was that 1972 Tour ?
