Hi Mike,

Yep,whatever club you follow you got to admire how much he cared about football.

Met him once a few years back and he was happy to indulge my inane babbling with warmth and humour.

He will be missed.

Cheers,

Si.

excellent manager and a fine man.

Always thought he was greatly underappreciated at the time that he was England manager. There's been a significant amount of revision of that in the last few years.

RIP Bobby.

The last great England manager. A decent man and great coach. He will be mourned by Barca fans too, I'm sure. RIP.

I always got a chuckle at his comment on Match of The Day regarding how to deal with the problem of hooligans after Millwall fans ran amok at Ipswich in the late 70's - "we should burn the bástards". Brilliant.

Jimmy Hill wasn't entirely impressed at his lack of tact as I recall.

I made up a statistics table of the English football managers. Unfortunately as a table it didn’t work. If you want it as word-document mail me, indicate that you are from iorr.

Therefore I have to sum up a bit.
Robson: 1982 – 1990 (3rd longest period and games managed)
95 games, 47 won, 30 drawn, 18 lost (goals score 154:60)
If you consider the rates he was actually under the average: 49% won (the average is 55), drawn 32 instead of 27%, losses about the average
Robson was the 6th of 15 managers since 1946.
Him, Alf Ramsay and the first, Walter Winterbottom, are the only Sirs.
Fabio Capello is by far the most successful now: 80% won - whereas Terry Venables lost only two games = 8 per cent. But despite that he wasn’t really that successful: 11 drawn...

Even though I'm German I find it really sad that such a great name in football passed away

Geht mir auch so. Weißt Du, was ihn wohl den Trainerjob gekostet hat: WM 1990 gegen Deutschland verloren (Beckenbauer Trainer) im ... Elfmeterschießen.

translation: I feel the same. Do you know what cost him his job as a manager: losing against Germany (manager Franz Beckenbauer) World Cup 1990 by ... penalty.

RIP Bobby a gentleman in the footballing world.

JJHMick, it wasn't the 1990 semi final defeat that cost him his job. The English FA had delayed offering him a new contract so just before the start of Italia '90 he agreed to join PSV.

He will be greatly missed by all.

With a smile on your face and a tear right in your eye

I remember that World Cup defeat so well. He so very nearly got us there.
A great man and will be missed. Love and light to his family.

I read this again today from an interview a few years back. God bless Sir Bobby -

Journalist to Shola Ameobi: Do you have a nickname at the club?
Ameobi: Not really, no
J: So what do the lads call you?
SA: Shola
J: And what about Sir Bobby? What does he call you?
SA: Carl Cort.

Thank you for the info, Brumstone, I was interpreting. I guess they have been handled as one of the favourites, lose and then the resignment. Silly, of course, to say ("negotiating" is "allowed") I will leave anyway after the tournament.
It brought up a lot of memories. I was a goalkeepe myself and always liked the English ones like Banks and then Robson's Shilton. By studying the FA's website I found out that it was under Robson that Germany managed to be the first time outside the British Isles teams to win twice in Wembley.
Funny about the statistics: The FA doesn't count (but the German DFB does) three wins and one draw about 1910 against Germany because they were "amateur teams" as an FA offical answered my mail some years ago.
