Speak English Mick, or , the best songs are indecipherable

For the longest time (before the Internet) I thought this was the first verse in Brown Sugar:

Ko-Ko Shay she bought a cotton field
Slowin in the market down in New Orleans
God O say she’s doin alright
Here in with the women
Jus around midnight

I even wrote and recorded a song with an old college band of mine titled “Ko-Ko Shay.” And to this day when I’m drunk enough and feeling just the right amount of shameless, I’ll karaoke the song that way. And believe you me, I karaoke the sh*t out of that song.

OK, here's what I know about Mick and his lyrics. He puposely does this. It dates back to the old blues singers. Listen to some old blues records. You can't understand them. I read an article once where Mick said he sings some lyrics that way, just to make the listener guess what he's saying.

I also thought it may be a trick to fit the lyrics to the melody. Just cram them all together and hit the rhyme. Know what I mean?

That happened with EXILE, and in a word, "God" or the greatest rock and roll band ever. Which for me is the same damn thing. OOOOPS, maybe you mean the song "Stoned." The first time I spun that I felt like I was breaking the law. I also used to turn down the part in SYMPATHY that goes "I was around when Jesus Christ had his moments of doubt..." just to keep my mother from worrying and my bed from levitating at night. Catholics, boy we got issues!

gold coast slave she's bound for cotton fields
sold in the market down in New Orleans
scared old slaver knows he doing all right
hear him whip the women just around midnight
Brown Sugar how come you taste so good
Brown sugar just like a young girl should

Drums beat cold english blood runs hot
Lady of the house knows when he's gonna stop
How do I know he's doing all right
You should have heard him just around midnight

This is about all I can do from memory I think it is right here

Did he mention in the article what would be gained by such a tactic?

Mick has always said that he makes himself hard to understand and he copped it from Little Richard.

Unless he's doing them in another language, they are always in English. It's just up to the listener to distinguish exactly what he is saying. Mick is not an American citizen last I knew so it's quite daft for someone to say something like that, 'speak English Mick'... that is up to American's that have to deal with Mexican's or various Central and South American people that are working for next to nothing, undermining the American jobs, etc...the usual bitch that everyone has in the United States and does NOTHING about.

I bet your mama was a tent show queen
And all her boyfriends were sweet 16
I'm no schoolboy but I know what I like
You should have heard me just around midnight

I thought the full lyrics to Brown Sugar would be a minimal requirement for membership here.winking smiley

bah - the Beatles were worse for me.
I thought they were singin' "blah, blah, blahhha" when indeed it was "love, love lahave"
