There are certain filmmakers, particularly Martin Scorsese, or in my case only Martin Scorsese, that have used music by the Rolling Stones and changed the way I thought about it. I can't hear Jumpin' Jack Flash without thinking of Johnny Boy (De Niro) in MEAN STREETS, or hear "Can't You Hear Me Knockin'" without remembering how Scorsese had the balls to use all 7min 15sec of it during the jewelry heist in CASINO. (One of the many reasons I can excuse that film's length). But my all-time favorite is when everything is crumbling down in GOODFELLAS while 'Monkey Man' drives the point home. Any thoughts? Spare the comments about how Scorsese overuses the Stones, we all know that. If there is such a thing.
Scorsese uses Stones music only because he is a Stones FAN. Stones music has got nothing to do with the Mafia, as far as I can tell. It certainly has got nothing to do with the scenes in which he uses it. He could have found other music that would have been far more appropriate, if he thought about it a little.
Anyway, to answer you question, "Satisfaction" in Apocalypse Now.
tatters - I am with you on Satisfaction in Apocalypse Now but some of the Stones music has a certain menace about it and fits nicely into Martin's films especially CYHMK in Casino
The totally psychotic Bobby DeNiro in THE FAN when he is in his van driving along to SHATTERED on his stereo & is singing it at the top of his lungs & is just screaming out some words that resemble the song. You can just see in that moment how deranged he is & he is not on the same planet as the rest [or most] of us. He also goes on to mention how Mick & him were together & partying whilst the Stones were recording it at the Studio. Insane & brilliant all in one.
His role in that film is classic DeNiro. I rate it personally as his best ever villain character.
In the movie THE FAN, 3 other Stones classics are heard - GIMME SHELTER , START ME UP & SYMPATHY FOR THE DEVIL.
A brilliant movie!.
Also mention - CAN'T YOU HEAR ME KNOCKING - The full song played to start off the movie "BLOW" with Johnny Depp. Great opening to the film. Hooks you right in & is a great movie also.
I also like the way some films that use the Stones at the very end / or credits - FEAR & LOATHING IN LAS VEGAS - Jumpin' Jack Flash. V FOR VENDETTA - Street Fighting Man FULL METAL JACKET - Paint It Black
I like so many others eg - all Scorsese choices, Christine, but those are the ones at top of my list for Stones songs in movies.
Beside the already mentioned, Fool To Cry from 'Beautiful Girls' always stuck in my head, I think I've grown to like it more after hearing it in that movie...
Another favorite movie vs Stones songs, both because it is weired, because Robert de Niro is performing great as a crazy fan, and because it is stacked with great Stones songs:
You guys mentioned a lot of good ones, but this one is, for me, the hands-down best merging of Stones and film.
In "Mean Streets", when DeNiro slinks into the bar with a gal on either side and Jumping Jack Flash is blasting over the scene, Scorsese created a short but unforgettable moment.
Yep, imposter, that is the very scene I was referring to in the initial thread. Scorsese introduces Johnny Boy earlier in the movie as he plants a mail bomb for no apparent reason, but the JJF scene is the real introduction. Love how it opens with him checking his pants with the host at the front door of the bar (which is always red). Great movie, and still never talked about enough for my taste. There is a similar scene in the bar with Harvey K. and "Tell Me" playing on the jukebox.
I know this isn't strictly Stones but there is some film when "Ooh La La" comes on. they (the protagonists) are out in some crazy junkyard I think; on top of something. Maybe a crane. I just can not remember more about the film. Good scene though. I still one of the most powerful sequences of a Stones song in film is "Memo from Turner" in Performance.
Yep, ol' Wes is one of my favorites, and primarily because the guy knows how to use music. "Ooh La La" was used perfectly in RUSHMORE and I AM WAITING had a prominent moment in THE ROYAL TENENBAUMS with a brief snippet of RUBY TUESDAY, if I remember correctly.
Agreed about Wes Anderson, GeneGenie! One small correction though - actually it was Rushmore where I Am Waiting was used. Royal Tenenbaums featured back to back She Smiled Sweetly and Ruby Tuesday. It even had a close-up of a needle falling on a vinyl Between The Buttons. Man, I would love to talk music with Wes Anderson...
Always loved CYHMK at the beginning of BLOW (one of my fav films, btw) and of course JJF during the credits of FEAR & LOATHING IN LAS VEGAS.
Also (I think this wasn't mentioned yet), I was positively surprised when I was watching TROPIC THUNDER in the movies theatre last year and suddenly Sampathy For The Devil came on while they were making their way through the jungle. Made the film even better. *lol*
