Despite of Altamont 1969 being a 10 star performance, and Leeds 1971 being a real laid-back average show....my favourite live version of Stray Cat Blues of Leeds 71. Also....the great GYYYO version of this song seems pale, compared to the studio version (and Leeds). Maybe the only song on GYYYO that doesn't rival the studio version.

OF COURSE.... that's why I threw in "Don't Cheat" which meant can you figure it out without looking at the date - file name - on top (of course the date is an obvious give away as we all know)... so I'm asking StonesTod if he cheated or not (in a very friendly goofy quiz kinda way of course) smiling smiley - Shows Altamont wasn't all bad....

i did a blindfold test, so that i wouldn't be influenced by the name of the file. but, i could smell just fine and it smelled just like altamont...

Yeah, for sure Eric, the studio version is amazing but there are a few live scorcher versions... I really like the Ya-Ya's one but not anything very recent (since '89 probably)... Leeds is a super good one, gotta agree....

Since when, Helter....? Since seeing them perform it at Inglewood Forum 1973 would be closer to the truth.....come on! 1989....? They didn't do it live between 1976 and 2002....and 2002 was not - well; it wasn't really a stray stray cat

Helter, I think that is a guy named Phil over there, and he is on the money.
BTW - as bad as Altamont was, the Stones rocked their ass off.

Yeah Erik, Forum 73 was probably it.... what is the box set one? Paris? Yeah, that's what you're talking about I think - Paris , 2002.... didn't work, it was more like a Grandpa Cat that ran out of Testosterone or Viagra or SOMETHIN'.... Time to put SCB in the "song retirement file" smiling smiley

Thanks PR2000, yeah, everything I've heard from Altamont really rocks. I don't think the trouble was as wide spread as the film makes one feel and the Stones were charged up, that's for sure... Think I'll give Phil a try, he has some amazing stuff (I basically quit collecting the live/alternative stuff when CD's came out - my vinyl collection is massive though, had a great record store right around the corner from school so we had plenty of time to "shop till we dropped" ) smiling smiley

I listened to London Roundhouse '71 today, and I definitely think that's a better performance overall than the Leeds gig, with a wonderful Stray Cat Blues.

BTW -- Stray Cat Blues was bloody excellent on the '70 tour. Check out Essen '70 if you get the chance. But yeah, in the end, this Altamont version is maybe the best apart from the studio version.

The Altamont concert is available on bootleg in very good audience quality. The Stones were on top of their game that night, but the guy with the tape recorder got knocked pretty frequently, so there's a lot of noise and dips in the volume. This adds to the eerie, uneasy atmosphere, but I'd *love* to lay my hands on a properly mastered soundboard recording of this legendary gig, just to get the actual music in as good form as possible.

Some songs doesn't fit the Stones anymore, this is one of them, looks more a Stray Dead Cat a bit implausible to me

Mick Taylor's solo on SCB on Ya Ya's is one of his finest moments....
But Altamont has an intensity unequalled...

I think Essen'70 was one of Jagger's best live singing ever.

the studio version is the best of the lot BY FAR.

If we want to discuss details, the live versions during the Taylor years are overall good, but mainly thanks to MT's great contributions. The rest of the band never quite nailed it (just listen to Ya Ya's).

In all post 2002 versions the band plays its ass off, best performances ever of this song. The blend of two rhythm guitars - with Keith's open tuned punch replacing the soft arpeggio - and Watts greatly improved drumming, is exactly what was missing during the Taylor years - i.e. the power of the studio version.

Now if only we could have those wild young MT solo lines over these late versions ...

One thing we haven't touched on yet are the horns. In 69 no horns. But this was one of the very first tunes they ever used Keys/Price on. And the horns added a great new dimension to the song.

I agree with that, Palace Revolution. On that Roundhouse '71 version, the horns really lifted the song, just like on Essen '70.

Amsterdamned -- Yeah, Mick's singing on Essen '70 may very well be his best ever. Absolutely soulful and powerful.

This is a good one, too, from the same era. (Posted many times, but who cares...)

I think the live verson of "Stray Cat Blues" from 1969 to 1971 captures fine way the specific 'slow blues groove' (to name it) the Stones got during that time. The same as they do with "Little Queenie" and "Carol" as well, not to forget "Honky TonK Woman"... It is VERY effective.

In the following years (from 1972 on) they somehow 'lost' this particular slow groove in the favor of a faster beat (which was awesome in its own terms, but is another story). Listen particularly what 'happened' to "Midnight Rambler" to know what I try to talk about.
