My 3 favorite versions of Jumpin' Jack Flash
Posted by: Amused ()

it's been a thread like this before but as I can't find it and there's still something to talk about, let's give it a try.

Jumpin' Jack Flash - the definitive tune of mighty rock and roll. huge uptempo track with a great riff, creative solo part and one of the best Mick's vocals.
also, pretty optimistic lyrics... "it's all @#$%& up but it's all right now!"
I've been waiting for many years for someone to sing it "I'm jumpin' Jack Flash, it's a @#$%& gas!" smiling smiley

so, once we know that... my 3 favorite versions:

3 STUDIO VERSION
such a cool groove on that one... just perfect sound & cool production.
2 2002/2003 LICKS VERSION
completely redone song. hard rocking tune and just awesome use of horn section!

1 ROCK AND ROLL CIRCUS
bluesy, starting slow and then getting faster... Mick's vocals are top of the world here.

I never quite got it what's so good about 1969 version. OK, they were playing miracles then, it's a great opener, but they used to play it better! Groovier.

honorable mention to Chuck and the stuff he did to this song on SAL performance.
and also, let's kill anyone who puts "g" in the title of this song smiling smiley

Correct - there is no 'g' in Jumpin' Jack Flash as there is in Tumbling Dice.

I think the genius behind the 69 version is it wasn't so lumpy, as it is now. Now it's played as a cinder block where as 69 and into the early 70s,of course, it was more fluid and steady.

Whilst its always good live nothing comes close to the studio version. That record is as close as you get to rock and roll heaven.

I don't fancy MM too much but the 1969 version is a real treat.

I love it when it is early in the set. As long as they don't turn it into a 8 minute variety number. Yes 69, R&R Circus Same thing with "Brown Sugar" Don't make the 'Whoo" a crowd thing LOL

there was a funny movie accompanying Aretha's version.
Keith played on it.

I've often wondered about JJF on Brussels Affair. It just doesn't seem to capture that song like Gimme Shelter and SFM did. Those were great versions. JJF doesn't seem to let loose in the same way. I would love to have a great 1973 JJF version. I've never heard it - yet.

I still like the studio version the best....such a fantastic song to be played as loud as your neighbors could take it.

I bought this when it came out on 7" vinyl. Gave it to a girl I thought I was in love with. Damn. Loved it then for Keiths superior riffage. And it rocks compared to Micks solo stuff and helped to fire Keith up for Talk is Cheap. So in a roundabout way we have this to thank for the Stones regrouping for Steel Wheels.

I think they performed it very well on the voodoo tour.

With the plethora of live albums and live bootlegs there are some tunes that have this sort of evolution about them.

JJF - already noted

Street Fighting Man - the studio version is excellent, of course. GYYYO is outstanding as is the Licks - not exactly the live album but the MSG show is outstanding...Stripped is great too. All around, excellent.

SFTD - GYYYO is my fave, followed by LYL and then the studio version. I liked the SW/UJ version but it's still lacking - and they haven't improved on it since, keeping it to that disco Casio keyboard version that just SUCKS.

Start Me Up - Flashpoint, studio and I guess...Still Life. Since SW/UJ I think they've just destroyed it but that's just me.

Brown Sugar - LP version, I really like the energy of the Live Licks version...dunno about any other live version. I guess It's Getting Hot Up Here is pretty good.

So fast though! Damn!
