College Students On Jeopardy Are Stones Illiterate!
Posted by: mickschix ()

Today on Jeopardy a panel of college students had the following question which I paraphrased: Martin Scorcese's latest music documentary entitled " Shine A light" is about what legendary rock band? " None of the 3 contestants rang in to answer! I was appalled! They didn't even have a guess! So, my question is this; do most college kids have no knowledge of the Stones or classic rock in general?? I know about Indie Rock, not a lot but something, and about Green Day and Cold Play but this age group obviously doesn't care much about rock history! Don't they know about cinema? I wonder if they know who Martin Scorcese is..just curious, and annoyed!

How can you be annoyed ? They are from a different generation . I'm 53 and I'm rather good at music trivia from the early sixties and on but before that I'm pretty clueless .

I'm sure it's the same with these students . They might know some really big hits but that's about it .

What were the questions ? Can you recall any ?

This example you cited doesn't just reflect how substandard US students are these days, it also points to how vacuous they are on a cultural level.
What % of college kids couldn't find Iraq on a map??? It was very high.

Right MK, they have pockets of knowledge but have huge gaps in their general education. That's why I agree that from this point forward, education has to be made a priority...and now I'm speaking beyond rock music.
Boston, I guess I see your point but we know about ELVIS!! I can name quite a few of his songs and have a pretty good knowledge of his musical roots. Not to know a little about the Stones, and such an easy question, seems weird!

Actually, I don't think it's a very easy question. First of all I'm guessing most college kids don't listen to classic rock radio. I don't even listen to classic rock radio. Secondly, the movie 'Shine A Light" was played only at selected theaters and not at all of the major theater chains. It wasn't advertised much outside of specific markets. In my opinion, most kids don't give a sh!t about the Rolling Stones and, although I think they are missing out on some killer music and R&R history, I don't really blame them.

Now as for the comments about other inadequacies of college kids' education, I agree. The quality of the education seems to have gone downhill from back when I graduated from college in the early 80's. I hope I'm wrong....just an observation.

i would venture a guess that americans NOT in college would be harder pressed to find iraq on a map.

i'm not surprised that a random group of 3 college kids couldn't answer the stones question. doesn't mean they haven't heard of the stones, though. really has no bearing on their awareness of cultural things, either. there are plenty of college-aged kids that know classic rock music, because they like it (my 3 kids do - all 19 and over)...not because of any "cultural" aspect about it.

I doubt that Jeopardy picks their players randomly, and the Stones have been newsworthy for years, primarily for their music, and also for their lives apart from music, and so they have a cultural identity for sure.

American kids not in college probably are in Iraq.

probably depends on the institution, but actually i've been very impressed by what i've been privy to regarding the quality of college education.

right on, its not an easy question. But i've said it once and i will say it again, "i'm sorry to say but our band is just not relevant anymore."

A lot of older people too have not heard of the film.
As Lukester said, it didn't really play very long, not in most cities
in the States. The publicity didn't seem all that good either, perhaps
because of the cost. Most stars of a film make the rounds of the talk shows to
publicize it. Yes, there were a few premieres here and there.

That's a good point, Angee. It may be just the film that was not recognized.

Another good point !!

I live in a fairly large city with quite a number of movie theaters and I had to travel 30 miles to see the film .

I tell you MY 24 year old daughter in college would have buzzed in and been able to name at least 20 Stones songs Im quite sure! She has always made her parents quite proud!!

Hell at 11 years old she sang the lyrics to every Stones song at the Citrus Bowl Orlando 97, (another proud moment)!!! I take that back, she was only stumped with 'Respectable' if memory serves me right.

I work with a bunch of young guys who are musicians and it's very frustrating trying to have a conversation because I can mention someone like Eric Clapton, and they have no idea what I'm talking about. But I really don't think it's all that surprising. It would be like me being able to knowledgeably discuss Dizzy Gillespie when I was in college. I couldn't do that then, and I can't do that now.

Edith Grove, you made my day!! That is a riot! But if I had a kid like that one, well.....let's just say, I'm GLAD I have no kids, especially after seeing that one.
Tatters, the Stones are STILL performing artists and I guess I did find it amazing that even just in passing, the Stones aren't on everyone's radar. Those kids didn't know CLAPTON?? Yikes! Well, you just illustrated my point. I'll get over it!! LOL.

HA HA! What do The Rolling Stones say?

YCAGWYW.

THAT'S RIGHT.

I like how the dad said that.

Mexicostone probably would have gotten it - and then would chirp in some stupid comment about Iron Maiden being better.

I'm afraid the decline of education begins well before kids get to college!!
